Corning outlasts Gridley in D-IV semifinal By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor CORNING With about four minutes left to play, a sense of urgency kicked in for the top-seeded Corning Cardinals boys basketball team. Up 38-36, the fourthseeded Gridley Bulldogs were closing in after hitting a 3-pointer. The Cards' star junior forward Michael Shoemaker then bulldozed his way in the lane on the subsequent play for a point-blank layup to put his team up four. It was indicative of Corning's determination Wednesday against a pesky Gridley team in a Division IV semifinal at Corning High School, where the Cards outlasted the Bulldogs 50-43 to reach the section championship game. They'll now face rival Orland (24-4), the No. 2 seed, at Chico State on Saturday. Corning (26-2) distinctly remembers where it finished last year in the semis against Central Valley. The Cards had no plans to revisit a premature end to their season. We got this far last year and then we lost. We're using that as fuel for this year, Shoemaker said, adding that in the second half, as Gridley was making its run, his thinking was: We're not going down again. In no way was it easy for the Cards despite a lively opening sparked by pent up anticipation and a vocal following that had Corning up 7-0 about five minutes into the game. The Cards' defensefirst mindset disrupted the Bulldogs and forced them to take contested shots late in the shot clock. The difference after those five minutes? Those shots started falling for the Bulldogs. Gridley's Shobi Khan, Mat Scott and Tyler Abrego had field goals in those final three minutes of the first period to trail Corning 8-6 going to the second. The Cards' slow, plodding and patient pace would continue, and Gridley would be there, hanging around, finding short bursts of energy as it did when the Bulldogs' Samuel Cota drained a 3 to give his team a 9-8 lead early in the second period. Corning senior guard Chayce Maday would regain an 11-9 lead after knocking down two free throws and Shoemaker, who had been quiet thus far scoring wise, would convert a traditional 3point play after getting fouled on a layup attempt to again put the Cards up at 14-11. Corning was in familiar territory at the break, leading the Bulldogs 1915 and on pace for a low-scoring affair. But Shoemaker's 6 points and 9 rebounds at the half was just a taste of what turned into a shootout in the second half. The Cards' Trevor Skousen, who mirrored Shoemaker's scoring output in the first half with 6, would continue to be a threat from outside. He drilled three timely 3s in the game, paced the third quarter with another 6 points and finished with 15 on the night. Shoemaker added 5 in the third and the Cards, which started the third period on a 7-0 run, would go to the fourth up 34-26. Gridley, on the back of Scott and in line with its ability to hang around, would make a final push toward a semifinal upset. Scott scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter in a hurry. With time ticking away, Scott made back-to-back 3s late in the period to trail 48-43. When Gridley found him again on their next possession, he wouldn't convert on a third, and Corning would put the final touches on its semifinal win. We were giving them open 3s and they were hitting them, said Shoemaker, who finished with 21 points and 14 boards and added, (Scott) kept them in the game. He's a really good player. Junior forward Nick Hoag added: We had to stick with our defense. We know we can play defense and our offense will be there at the end. Now the Cards will take on the Trojans at 12:45 p.m. Saturday at Chico State. The last time Corning reached the section championship game was in 2009. The last time it won was in 2006. We owe it to the seniors this year, Hoag said. And we got it for them. Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 5272151, ext. 111 or at spor ts@redbluffdailynews.com.
