Yet the No. 1 overall draft pick from 2005 did make one thing known: The veteran quarterback still considers himself a starter. And he hoped to get that chance again. Now, he appears to have it. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal cannot become official until March 12, when the NFLs new business year begins. Another person familiar with the swap said the 49ers will get a secondround pick in Aprils draft, No. 34 overall, and a conditional pick in the 2014 draft. After spending his first eight up-and-down years with the 49ers, Smith will get a welcome new start. The Chiefs will get the proven play-caller they hope can help turn things around under a new coach much the way Smith did under Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco. You never know when your opportunitys going to come, Smith said late in the season. The good ones are ready when they do come. The Chiefs have gone this route before, acquiring Joe Montana from the 49ers nearly 20 years ago, in April 1993, after he won four Super Bowls but gave way to Steve Young San Franciscos quarterback of the future. They come in all shapes and sizes, with varying degrees of baggage and divergent personalities, and with significantly larger bank accounts than the average Dick and Jane. High profile. Reclusive. Intrusive. Charismatic. Disconnected. Neglectful. In that sense, the NBA has something for everyone. Kings fans, for instance, are familiar with charismatic figures and celebrity owners, but equally familiar with owners who neglect their franchises, become crippled during an economic downturn, and then get lapped by more business-and-basketball savvy peers, many of whom continue to thrive in the league's small to midsize markets. (AP) The way Ryan Vogelsong is pitching this spring, Giants manager Bruce Bochy should have no worries when the right-hander leaves for the World Baseball Classic. Vogelsong pitched three more scoreless innings Wednesday in San Franciscos 8-8 tie with the Los Angeles Angels. He really looked sharp, Bochy said. Vogelsong, 14-9 with a 3.37 ERA with the Giants in 2012, allowed a leadoff sin- gle to Mike Trout in the first and nothing else. He struck out four. In his first spring start Sunday, Vogelsong worked two shutout innings. Hes expected to get one more start with the Giants before joining Team USA. Everything felt really good, Vogelsong said. Ive just got to sharpen up my breaking ball a little bit and things will be where they need to be. Barry Zito, who had his See GIANTS, page 2B IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Anderson girls basketball team holds off late Corning surge Daily News photo by Andre Byik Corning Highs Marisa Vinson, right, during a Division IV Northern Section semifinal game at Anderson High on Tuesday. Anderson beat Corning 51-46. By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor ANDERSON The third-seeded Corning girls basketball squad had an unusual start and turbulent finish Tuesday, but the No. 2 Anderson Cubs held off the visiting and surging Cards for a 51-46 victory to advance to the Division IV Northern Section championship game. Down 40-25 going to the fourth quarter, the Cards' (15-11) offense had stalled, and the Cubs (18-10) balanced attack through Katie Nunnelly down low, and Fallon Greenhaw was paying off. Up 47-34 with about two minutes left to play, Anderson looked to be comfortably cruising to a third consecutive section title-game appearance. The teams' faithfuls were quietly waiting for a common ending. The Cubs, now descending, just needed to land. Corning's Auree Mulliner then took a 3pointer. Made it. Anderson threw in and turned the ball over near midcourt. The Cards' Bailey Jennings stepped to the arc, shot and drilled a 3. Rough patch ahead. Timeout Anderson. In about 30 seconds, the Cards brought themselves within seven with 1:24 left to play. The Cubs, out of the time out, again turned the ball over. The gym grew louder See CARDS, page 2B
