T he Associated Schools of Construction Region 6/7 competition is held in Reno, NV, every year. ere are more than a dozen competitions that schools can compete in, such as pre-construction, mechanical, electrical, concrete solutions, project management, etc. A significant number of the competitions are not just region 6/7, but actually open to anyone, so we competed against schools from all over the country. Oregon State has been a heavy hitter at the competition for years. In the last five years, 15 brothers have participated in the ASC student competition. We have a solid number of Lambda Chis studying construction engineering management, so we generally have one of, if not the strongest, fraternal presences within the OSU teams. Lambda Chis have been on and led teams to four first-place finishes and two third-place finishes in the last five years. is year, Spencer Soto '17-1928, Josh Clouston '16-1869, Grant Smith '15-1845, and I were four of the six members on the mechanical team. e competition problem consisted of preparing a proposal that included a detailed price estimate, schedule, construction plan, and more for a cetyl alcohol distillation column. We were given construction drawings, specifications, and other pertinent details and had 16 hours to complete the project. e following morning each team had to provide a presentation to the panel of judges on their proposal. We were recognized for having the closest bid (to the actual charge by the contractor on the real project), and we placed third in the mechanical competition. "Reno is a great way to showcase everything we learn in the classroom as well as what we learn during summer internships. Reno is also a great place to interview and get an internship for the summer if a student doesn't already have one," Grant Smith '15-1845 said. "On average, of the CEM's that graduate, nearly 95 percent already have full-time jobs lined up. e success of the program is due to the dedication of the teaching staff as well as eager students who are excited to learn. e program's impact on the chapter shows with Lambda Chis constantly at the top of their classes and leading Reno Teams." My decision to study CEM was influenced heavily by seeing so many Lambda Chi brothers in the program enjoying themselves and doing very well. Aer a year of studying business, I decided to make the switch. I have been loving it, and have been afforded with many great work and educational opportunities.
