Page 5 Dean W. Barnes '40-433 was awarded regular Army commission aer World War II. Dean served 42 months in Southwest Pacific area during the war. Aer the war, he served three years in Germany and commanded an engineer combat battalion for one year. Dean was an instructor at Army Command and General Staff College. He was awarded an Army commendation medal and Legion of Merit medal. Dean was from the OSC ROTC, and held the ranks of 2nd Lt. U.S. Army Reserve and Lt. Col. Norman E. Waggoner '43-492 served as a lieutenant (junior grade) in the United States naval reserve and has had a successful career as an American civil engineer. Norman's achievements include design of the Salmon Creek sewage system in Clark County, WA; conceptual design of the 14 MW mass burning power plant in Brooks, OR; and site selection and conceptual design of Djakarta Airports in Indonesia. He is a life member of several organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, Water Environmental Federation, and American Waterworks Association. Norman's interests include fly-fishing, scuba diving, and traveling. Norman lives in Palo Alto, CA. Gordon H. Price '49-584 was part of the First Cavalry Division, PFC from 1954-56. Email: ksprice@molalla.net John W. Christianson '58-704 spent 22 years in the Air Force, primarily flying rescue helicopters. He took the first Air Force rescue helicopters into Da Nang, Vietnam, in 1964 and 1965. John did another tour in 1967 and 1968, and also spent five years in Alaska flying rescue helicopters. He worked for the Red Cross for several years, taking blood mobiles out and setting up blood drive sites. John was also a regional safety officer, but is now retired. Email: johnlouc@msn.com John E. Wilson '59-719 served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1964-70. He spent 31 years in the U.S. Forest Service and did some consulting work for five more years aer his retirement. John's wife, Sharon, passed away in January 2015. John reports, "Now I'm just hanging on!" John's kids all live within a two-hour radius. He also has eight grandkids and one great-grandchild. John S. Brady '60-725 was part of the Peace Corp in Maceio, Alagoas, Brazil, from June 1966-68. He lived and worked in the worst slum in Maceio doing basic sanitation projects. John helped install latrines in more than 50 percent of the residences in the slum and organized a signature campaign that got running water installed. He was not allowed to carry a gun or be armed and had to learn to speak the language and work with everybody to get along. Email: josambra@global.t-bird.edu Alan R. Lyons '63-739 served as U.S. Air Force captain for three and a half years. Email: alan.lyons@frontier.com Robert C. Etherington '66-777 served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968-71. He completed the OCS-basic danger course and utility officer course in 1968-69. Robert served in Vietnam in the 9th Engineer Btn., 1st Marine Air Wing in 1970 and 1st Marine Air Wing in El Toro, CA, in 1971. He was granted early release due to peace time when he was a 1st Lt. Email: rcetherington@charter.net Michael L. Driscoll '68-811 served on the USS Yorktown, CVS-10, as a U.S. Navy (E5) interior communications electrician mate, petty officer second class. Michael was present at two atomic tests—Frigate Bird on May 6, 1962, and Swordfish on May 11, 1962, located 370 miles off the coast of San Diego, CA. He was on the Far East Cruise in 1962-63 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Michael was stationed at Kodiak, AK, and attended "A" in San Diego. Email: mldriscoll@bsportswear.com James O. Loiland '68-802 was part or the U.S. Army from 1972-74 in the Sp5, Army Veterinary Corps. James served in the Oregon Army National Guard in 1975-76. Email: loilandjma@gmail.com Craig A. Johnson '69-825 served from 1970-72 in the U.S. Army Specialist 5. Ronald C. Plucker '75-958 retired from the U.S. Navy in 2008, aer 30 years of service, as a Navy captain. Ronald flew an EA-6B as a naval flight officer, obtaining over 1,000 aircra carrier landings. He commanded two combat squadrons and received many awards, including a Bronze Star and multiple air medals for valor. Ronald was a commanding officer of NROTC at the University of Idaho and Washington State. He continues to work his second career at the Army Corps of Engineers in Walla Walla, WA, aer serving 30 years in the Navy. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Kyoko, and 4-year-old son, Cooper. Baughnsmith '92-1355 served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1983-1988 in the air/sea rescue division on the north Oregon coast and Caribbean area. Craig lives in Kirkland with his wife and daughter. He has spent 15 years with King County Medic One as a paramedic. Craig owns a side business in emergency medicine training for doctors, nurses, and paramedics. He is with Northwest Medical Training Group. Craig is also a bagpiper for the local fire department pipes and drums team. Email: cbaughnsmith@gmail.com Kristopher L. Faught '94-1429 is a Lt. Col., serving on the U.S. Central Command staff at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL. He has served there since commissioning in 1997, when he graduated from OSU. "I've been incredibly lucky and have served with innumerable men better than myself," Kris writes. "It's been a great calling, but I'm looking forward to moving on." Kris lives in St. Petersburg, FL. Email: klfaught@gmail.com Jeffrey Lofgren '10-1714 (honorary initiate) started serving as a highly-qualified expert/senior mentor to the U.S. Air Force in January. Jeff retired from working at NATO's U.S. headquarters on the Allied Command Transformation in October. Jeff was the senior U.S. military member in the headquarters responsible for capability development in NATO. He spent 34 years and six months in active duty and four more years at the Air Force Academy. Jeff flew the F-16, F-15, KC-10, and T-38 planes, and commanded at all levels of the Air Force.
