Brothers ever, Friends at heart Angus Smith '05 Appreciates DKE Bonds W hen Angus Smith '05 followed in his brother's footsteps by attending Colgate University, he already had a good idea about what the beautiful campus had to offer. As Angus started his own chapter at Colgate, he realized that he could be a part of a special group that would help make the University even stronger. The Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon had gone through some tough times prior to Angus's arrival at Colgate, but he knew that the Fraternity was ready to blossom. "When I joined DKE, they had been suspended for a few years and they were able to take their first university sanctioned class my year," Angus said. "I was struck by how healthy the Chapter was despite the sanctions from the Hill. It also helped that the guys I hung out with freshman year and early sophomore year were joining DKE as well, so that made the decision easy." A few of Angus's favorite memories of the Mu Chapter included DKE Olympics, Hot Tub Livin', Syracuse Kappa mixers, intramural softball, and whiffle ball on Crunk Memorial Field, but what made his Greek life experience special was that he accomplished much more than having fun with good friends. "DKE is not just another beer lodge," Angus, who served as Brother Sigma, said. "The bonds that are formed are different than any other organization on campus, and it showed in just about everything we did while on campus—community service, intramural athletics, and social events. We were (generally) a hard-working group and adhered to the principles of Mu, and we knew how to have a good time as well." Many of the bonds that Angus built in the DKE house have carried on since he graduated from Colgate. Angus had the pleasure of working with Carl Balouzian '07 at Gleacher & Company, Cantor Fitzgerald, and Pernix Therapeutics before he accepted his current job as the Chief Financial Officer at Rockwell Medical Inc. in November. "The transition from college to professional life isn't always easy. It comes with a new set of expectations and often a big learning curve," Angus said. "Having someone there to help with that transition is critical. I had a few people that helped me when I got out of school and their support was invaluable." Angus also feels blessed to have the support of his family. His wife, Emily, is a fellow Colgate graduate, and they have two sons, Aidan and Riley. Angus is hopeful that Aidan and Riley will one day be a part of the DKE brotherhood. "The Chapter has an incredible amount of history, and I think alumni support is critical to make sure that we are preserving that history and allowing new history to be made," Angus said. "The support of alumni makes the continued success of Mu possible, and also shows to the younger crowd that the bonds that are formed as undergraduates are lifelong. Brothers ever, friends at heart."
