For those of us that were of the Mama Dean era, we remember her as an institution––never faulting or wavering in her steadfastness to each of us. I remember Vera Mae running a tight kitchen, the ever- present young Gracie, and so many others that led us to our feeling that the Phi Mu house was our home. There is another jewel in our midst, a fixture for every girl that has come through our doors since 1986––his name is Willie Burt, better known as Mr. Willie. hottytoddy.com did an article on Mr. Willie: "Within a week of a collegiate getting an invitation to join Phi Mu, Mr. Willie already knows her name. Helping every sorority member feel right at home is what he does best!" I have witnessed this phenomenon when we have open house events at Alpha Delta. He KNOWS EVERY GIRLS' NAME no matter if they pledged in 1990 or 2009. It is an incredible experience to watch this interchange of mutual respect and fondness. Sweet Gracie is still with us and our kitchen team is pretty remarkable! Vicki, or Ms. V, our housemother, is an integral part of all the aspects of the workings of our Phi Mu house. We are very blessed! While many sororities and fraternities are opting for food services, I cannot help thinking of the closeness that we share with our staff and what a loss that would be for us all. I recently had a meeting at the house, and when I arrived I was delighted to see Oxford's Mayor Robyn McKenzie Tannehill '89 eating lunch. We were glad to have her and proud to call her our sister. I later saw a picture of Robyn and Willie. I wondered if Willie wanted the picture taken with his friend, the mayor, or was it the other way around . . . I imagine it was a little bit of both! Thank you, Willie Burt––a true Phi Mu gentleman!
