7 I llinois Alpha received a University reprimand for hosting an unregistered social event at the chapter house with a sorority on December 3, 2017. Alcohol had been purchased and provided by a member on behalf of the chapter with no risk management procedures in place. At this event, an underage guest was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital by ambulance. A University Reprimand indicates that the organization's behavior is inappropriate for the academic community. The Interfraternity Council Judicial Board found the chapter responsible for violating a number of Kolusis bylaws, as well as provisions of the University of Illinois Student Code. The University reprimand expired March 18, 2019, without further incident, meaning that Illinois Alpha is no longer sanctioned by the University of Illinois (though the chapter remains on the national fraternity's Risk Management Watch List). As a part of its compliance with the Interfraternity Council's Judicial Board mandate, the chapter successfully completed two seminars with 90-plus percent attendance. The seminars included an Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP) and a program on risk management policies that was provided by the national fraternity's Member Safety Team. By being placed on the national fraternity's Risk Management Watch List, the chapter's insurance was downgraded to the second lowest tier for at least two years (representing a 176 percent increase in Illinois Alpha's insurance rates). This adjustment will be reevaluated in approximately one year. The undergraduate chapter has made adjustments to its annual budget accordingly. The Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) and the Board of Advisors acknowledge the important and necessary challenges faced by the undergraduate leadership as the chapter evaluates and works to realign its strategic priorities behind its mission of being a top- performing chapter. univeRsity RepRimanD foR RisK management event Illinois Alpha Remains on National Fraternity's Risk Management Watch List ILLINOIS ALPHA WELCOMES RESIDENT DIRECTOR CHRIS WALLACE O ver the past year or so, the AVC has discussed the possibility of employing a Resident Director to join the chapter. The AVC believed that a Resident Director could offer both the AVC and the chapter several benefits. A Resident Director is a full- time graduate student who resides within a chapter facility to provide the chapter with daily mentorship. Resident Directors focus their efforts on helping younger brothers manage the transition from high school to college, mentoring the chapter's executive officers in leadership, and facilitating high academic achievement through scholastic programming. A Resident Director has the following primary responsibilities: • Assist new members in their acclimation to college life. • Help older members prepare both personally and professionally for life after college. • Mentor a chapter's executive board to affect its ability to improve chapter operations and the membership experience. • Communicate the chapter's progress, goals, and metrics to the AVC, the SigEp Headquarters staff, and the University. • Aid in the academic and developmental programming for all members. • Work one-on-one with chapter brothers who may be struggling inside or outside of the classroom. Greek Affairs suggested that we contact the University's Veteran Services Support Department and Chris Wallace was recommended. Chris is a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in 12 countries, including a deployment to Iraq, where he was decorated for meritorious service. He is currently studying computer science and anthropology and grew up in Naperville. Chris joins a veteran-heavy class of trending Resident Directors at fraternities that includes Alpha Tau Omega, Phi Kappa Psi, Alpha Kappa Lambda, Acacia, and Lambda Chi Alpha. During the summer of 2018, the AVC invested in a resident director suite by demolition of the former first floor Room 1 and enlisting the professional design services of IKEA Business Center/Schaumburg. Both undergraduates and alumni agree that the new Resident Director suite is a competitive recruitment space for top post-graduate talent. We also agree that Chris has been doing a great job for both the AVC and the Chapter.
