editors corner Easter and Aspirations E very family has traditions, particularly holiday traditions. Case in Rebekah Sanderlin, senior editor point: deviled eggs. Growing up, my mother made the deviled eggs for every family gathering. This was not optional and was never discussed. Im not sure where the rest of the food came from, but a few things were guaranteed: Ma Miller would make blueberry Jello salad; Aunt Janie would bring broccoli cheese casserole; Mama Ruru fixed her banana pudding; Aunt Patricia could be counted on for corn pudding; Aunt Caroline would put together a relish tray and my mother made the deviled eggs. Always. I truly cannot count the number of times I watched her boiling a stock pot of eggs. She often enlisted help from me and my sisters to mash the yolks and stir in the mayonnaise, mustard and relish, her go-to recipe. We never saw her measure anything. My sisters and I all eager to be 'little mommies' would also help her fill the egg cavities, place them on deviled egg platters and sprinkle the tops with paprika. When each of us left home, Mom surprised us with our own beautifully wrapped deviled egg platters, her way of passing the torch. Nowadays there are always deviled eggs at our family gatherings, but my mother doesnt make them. That duty has been passed to me and my sisters. Maybe this Easter Ill volunteer to make the eggs, but Ill try the recipe on page 22 just to keep things interesting. Even traditions can benefit from a little bit of change. W hen I was little I always wanted to work as a grocery store cashier, and now Harris Teeter and Lowe's have made that dream come true. I have become quite skilled at operating the self-checkout kiosk. Dont have a SKU on that eggplant? I know right where to roll the menu to find it and key it in under Unpackaged Produce. I enjoy the satisfaction I get when I glance at my overstuffed, improperly loaded bags of groceries, as I see others still waiting in line to check out. On page 52 you can meet four local female professionals who are living out their dream jobs while serving in our community. With Easter upon us, the decorations, candy and eggs are tied to celebrating the real meaning of the holiday and food is a part of that too. Check out our recipe ideas for Easter leftovers. For many who partake in Lent sacrifices, it will end the fast of certain foods. A few of my friends gave up Facebook, which I found to be a grand idea. Growing up, having a new Easter outfit to wear to church and brunch afterwards was an annual must. While Easter fashion has become less formal and Sunday best has turned to Casual Friday attire for most, CityView asked four local boutiques to tell us what is In for Spring, for women of every age. Check out our guide for fashion and tips for putting it all together. Recognize our lovely models? They have many titles: student, daughter, career woman, volunteer, wife, mom, aunt, sister, tennis player.... Many thanks to all of our beautiful models. They are confident in themselves and really made this Women in Business issue fun to create. 8 | March/April 2013 Kelly Twedell, features editor
