MEMORIES ON MILLEDGE p. 6 PBF FROM ONE SISTER TO ANOTHER Alumnae Share Career Advice and Wisdom Ellen ompson Reid '58 Real Estate "I list and sell all price ranges in Charleston, S.C., since 1974. I am lucky to have invested in some properties of my own for rental income. Go to www.toastmasters.org and find a club to join when you start to work, or just for fun. It was started in the late 1930s by Ralph Smedley, and helps you become a better speaker and learn so much about people. I have been a member since 1978 and have benefited greatly and traveled for fun." I loved being an administrator as well, which took me to 43 years of service. Happiness is loving what you do every day! Find a job that you truly enjoy and it will not feel like work." Email: nancylgasho@aol.com Gail Rogers Johnson '70 Human Resources "After working in human resources since 1976, I found that these later years were some of my happiest as I pursued work which I enjoyed the most, also known as following one's passion. Prior to graduating, become intentional about your field of interest by becoming involved in clubs and other activities related to your major. Study hard and purposefully pursue high grades in order to distinguish yourself from others in your field. Obtain, when possible, experience within your field of study, such as an internship and/or related part-time/summer experience. Interview for as many positions as possible prior to graduating to assist with identifying your best opportunity. Stay focused and committed to your goals. Never give up! Wishing you all the best of success and sending my Pi Phi love." Any college degree will provide you with the knowledge that if you don't know the answer or the solution, you will be able to find information that will guide you to make an educated decision." Email: acweeks12@att.net Debby Gouge Wood '82 Elementary School Teacher "e thing I enjoyed the most was the relationships I formed with my students and their families. I'm also a creative person, and teaching allowed me to thrive. ere's nothing like a child when they understand or accomplish something for the first time. And when they look at you knowing you share that pride, it's magic! If you are entering the teaching profession, know the first few years are tough. Reach out for help if you need it. Don't be afraid to rely on others as you find your way. Every year will be different so you must be able to adapt and go with the flow. No matter what new curriculum you're asked to teach, the most important thing will always be the relationship you form with each child. Remember, fair doesn't mean every child gets the same thing from you. It means every child gets what he or she needs. Teaching is a glorious adventure! Enjoy!" Email: debbywood22@gmail.com Hope Gatewood Spetnagel '83 Photographer "I love working with people and having the chance to catch that special moment! Don't be afraid to take chances and TRAVEL as much as you can!" Email: hsrduke@bellsouth.net Kendra Chastain Leffingwell '86 Internet Consulting "Interaction with many people, learning new things every day and keeping up with the latest technologies is what I recommend. Don't stress out about finding the end-all job/career right away. I majored in interior design, did that for about a year, got a job in money management and did that for about 10 years. I then moved to internet consulting for almost 10 and am now a stay-at- home mom. e earlier you figure out what your priorities are, the better. And most importantly, if you're a Christian, pray for God to show you His will for your life (and then listen and follow!)"
