JOCELYN MURPHY NWA Democrat-Gazette A s the Arkansas film industry grows, so too do the openings for local talent in all fields. Through networking and expanding the existing infrastructure here, Arkansans such as Little Rock costume designer Missy Lipps are discovering more opportunities to be hired in the industry without leaving the Natural State. Lipps was part of the crew for SkipStone Pictures' second film to shoot in Arkansas, "Max Winslow and the House of Secrets." (The California production company's first Arkansas venture, "F.R.E.D.I.," won Best of the Fest at the 2018 Bentonville Film Festival.) "Max" wrapped in January and premieres this summer, but Lipps is already in the throws of another project. Here, she gives What's Up! a peek at her job. Q. Tell me about the path that brought you to costume design? A. I'm an artist and clothing designer, so it's a perfect fit. A genius local, Mitchell Crisp, is an amazing designer and has been in the industry for years. She recommended me once years ago for the wardrobe department. I took the gig, and here we are today with me being the head of the department. Q. Tell me about your job responsibilities? A. My main responsibility on every film is to deliver the director's vision. We meet and constantly collaborate about who the characters are, what's the story line and how we can best deliver with accuracy and purpose. I manage a budget and a team to ultimately make a happy director and a great film. Q. What are you looking for or tapping into for the costumes you design? A. I'm directly tapping into the story line. Who are these kids? What's their lifestyle? What's the look based on where they are? What time of year is it? What is the scene calling for? Every single detail matters, and every decision has to convey that. Q. How does the wardrobe affect the character's persona? 19TH ANNUAL Winemaker's Dinner Thursday, May 16 Wines provided by E&J Gallo paired with a six-course meal by Bordinos. Tickets $225 Uncorked! A. Just like you and I, our wardrobe reflects our mood, our intention, where we're going, what we're doing. I want to convey exactly what's going on in the story line. Q. How have you seen the film industry in Arkansas grow? What kind of opportunities does that afford local people like yourself ? A. The industry has definitely expanded in Arkansas and continues to grow. It's exciting because locals get to jump in. Bringing in a team from out of state is cool; meeting new people and making industry connections never hurts. But doing a project with a local group is great because it's like we all show up for "NO-SLEEP" away camp for a month or so and work like crazy together. It's a wonderful and interesting dynamic. We all get more experience, and that puts us in a more hireable position for the next opportunities. Photo courtesy SkipStone Pictures
