3 CORNELL UNIVERSITY F ollowing forecasts for serious winter weather, Cornell Panhellenic decided to postpone Preference and Bid Day one weekend back, a first for Cornell. Preference took place on Saturday, January 26, with Bid Day on Sunday, January 27. On Bid Day, the Delta Chapter welcomed 37 new members, including five Alpha Phi legacies, to a slumber party-themed celebration. The new member class is composed of 29 freshmen and eight sophomores. Our 37 new members are enrolled in all but one undergraduate college across Cornell! • 24.3% College of Human Ecology • 21.6% College of Agriculture and Life Sciences • 18.9% College of Arts & Sciences • 10.8% The Hotel School • 10.8% School of Industrial and Labor Relations • 8.1% College of Engineering • 5.4% Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management CHANGES TO RECRUITMENT CONTINUE In addition to past recruitment changes like replacing skits with philanthropy presentations and activities and having potential new members (PNMs) only attend two preference events, recruitment 2019 brought another big change: house tours. In lieu of touring 411 Thurston Avenue, PNMs viewed "chapter experience" videos, which shared current members' live-in experiences and showcased the house. It was a big change, but it seemed to be well received by the PNMs! aoe, Danielle P. ALUMNAE NEWS Marian VamValkenburgh Goodrich '53 shares, "I have been living in Colorado for 22 years, but this spring we moved to a less remote area. We are done living off the grid. We love spending time with our grandkids and great-grandkids." Email: jimmarian1423@icloud.com Carol Hardy '59 shares, "I recently sold my home and moved to a cottage at Kendal at Ithaca." Email: chm7@cornell.edu Marjorie Olt Merts '85 shares, "Dave and I became empty-nesters this past fall, with the matriculation of our youngest, Andrew, at Yale. We did our very best to sell Cornell with a fantastic visit last April, but Andrew remarked that the kids at Yale seemed to have more fun. Our middle son, Jonathan, will be graduating in May 2019 from Case Western, and staying in the Cleveland area to work as an app developer at Progressive Insurance. Our oldest, David, is still working on his Ph.D. at Georgia Tech, but is also planning a wedding for May 2020 to his longtime girlfriend, Trina Walker. They are both graduates of University of Michigan. I'm still teaching science and Dave works for an automotive supplier, Valeo. We have been very fortunate during these 30 years as Michigan residents, but we also look forward to lots of travel in the near future, hopefully reconnecting with our Cornell friends.
