Gaps can be left between the stitches to form picots, which are used for practical construction as well as decorative effect. Tatting dates to the early 19th Cen- tury. Mynatt, a retired PG&E equipment operator, learned to tat about 20 years ago by watching his mother-in-law. He is an accomplished artist in leather tooling, and lost wax casting. During June’s Downtown Red Bluff Patriotic Days, Mynatt’s flag will be on display at HeartFelt Designs Gallery, 623 Main St. Veterans, friends and families are invited to bring downtown posters of tribute to their veterans for the celebration. These posters will hang in store front windows and are read my many passers-by. This is our history, said Tod Dolling, president of the Downtown Red Bluff Business Association. Part of Patriotic Days is Veterans Appreciation Day, June 12, on Washington Street. Military Sup- port Families will hold a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Ceremonies are at 8 a.m. Fiddlers, the Commu- nity Band and others will perform during this day of tribute to local veterans. (retired) Don and Bettye Kinser celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently with a fami- ly gathering at their home in Surrey Village, Red Bluff. Don is originally from Tucson, Ariz. and Bet- tye is from West Plains, Mo. They met at Nellis Air Force Base when Don was in pilot training and were married on graduation night, May 12, 1950. After 20 years of frequently moving their family to the four corners of the globe, after Don retired they went look- ing for "home" and a place to finally set down roots, and they found the perfect spot in Red Bluff on banks of the Sacramento River - that was 35 years ago. They were joined for the weekend festivities by their chil- dren Kris Horstman of Sun City, Ariz. and Kerry Kinser of Red Bluff; grandchildren Tracee Derbidge of St. George, Utah; Kimberly Horstman of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Jared Horstman of El Dorado Hills; and great-grandchildren Kelsie Webb, Katelyn Horstman and Jared M. Horstman. A reception was held in their honor at the Red Bluff First Baptist Church, where family and friends gathered to share their love and best wishes. Scholar Athletes Two outstanding graduating seniors will be honored at a luncheon on Thursday, May 27, when the Exchange Club of Redding scholar athletes are named. Five boys and five girls, have been chosen for the 28th annual award, which is co-sponsored by the Record Searchlight. The 10 finalists, their families and representatives from their schools have been invited to an event at Win- River in Redding. One boy and one girl will receive a $750 scholarship and a plaque. In addition, the eight runners-up each receive a $200 award and a plaque. Finalists include Jaklyn Wheeler and Devin Shoop, both of Red Bluff Union High School. Nominees must be seniors who achieved at least a 3.3 GPA throughout their high school career and par- ticipated in at least one sport during their senior year. Wheeler carries a 4.5 average and Shoop 4.32. Although I am thankful for the abundant rainfall we received, the accompanying killer frosts were damaging. This is the time that our gardens are bursting forth with color. Fresh new leaves seem brighter and are unblemished. Our perennials seem more robust and vigorous than previous years. Flowers have seemingly emerged from nowhere and fra- grance is in the air. Our senses are over- filled and our spirits are lifted. There is a spring in our step. Gardening chores seem to be a wel- come task. Weeds are easy to hand pull. Our garden is a joy to visit, a plant. place to daydream or "May-dream" if you will. It’s a time to take garden tours or simply visit homes of your friends. It’s a time to enjoy life. Sunny borders are boasting of roses, irises, snap dragons, poppies and pansies.
