From Firesides to House Updates,
Kappa Alpha and Chi Omega
Are Stronger than Ever
F
riendship. Personal Integrity. Service to Others.
Academic Excellence and Intellectual Pursuits.
Community and Campus Involvement. Personal and
Career Development. These are the six values we stand for as
members of Chi Omega; we live by them every day. As the
largest fraternal organization in the country, we are known for
our strong community of friendship and constant support—
both from each other and our Headquarters.
Marilyn McCrillis Nichols '75 represented Kappa Alpha
at Firesides in February at Headquarters in Memphis, Tenn.
The theme this year was "Her Welfare Ever at Heart," which
emphasized the safety of our collegians, being aware, and
maintaining the strong sisterhood support we've come to
know and love. "Our houses need to be safe, secure, and
nurturing," S.H. Shelley Potter shared during the event.
Chi Omega is fortunate to have so much support, but Greek
life as a whole is under extreme scrutiny. This has caused
challenges with Greek life participation and keeping houses at
capacity nationwide. Chi Omega will be among those Greek
organizations lobbying on our behalf at the Capitol to ensure
the integrity of our organization remains unchanged. While
we remain blessed to have such strong local and national
representation, it takes a village to keep us flourishing.
Locally, we continue to make improvements to Kappa
Alpha's beloved Chapter House. A few projects were
completed last summer, including the replacement of the
dining room furniture and some landscaping near the patio
area. As you can imagine, the dining room furniture takes
a beating from constant use by 60-plus women several
times a day, so it was time to replace the 24-year-old tables
and chairs. In keeping with the cardinal and straw scheme
throughout the house, the fabric on the new chairs flows
nicely with other areas.
Another item that needed some attention was the area where
the large locust tree at the southwest corner of the house was
cut down in 2017. We had a small retaining wall built and
some new landscaping installed in that area, which helps to
highlight the Joy Balderson Fountain on the patio.
We are also interviewing for a new house director. Though
we are sad to see Jan Tidball leave, we wish her the best
in her retirement. Additionally, Chi Omega Headquarters
has launched a new website and we encourage each of our
alumnae to visit everyday.chiomega.com and register. It
can be difficult to keep up with so many changes, but as Chi
Omegas, we know that we are capable when we face them
together. We are truly sisters on purpose.
Lovingly Yours in Chi Omega,
