S pring seems especially welcoming this year for our property maintenance staff who dealt with a steady workload of snow removal and ice prevention these past months. Ice formed on the upper sun decks as well and they were called to action to avoid internal damage to the house. The chapter wish list includes a new washer and dryer and some revamping to the laundry area. We hope to upgrade appliances and improve storage in the room. The kitchen lighting needs were met with more efficient replacements, and inspections confirm compliance with safety standards. Proposals are being sought for window repairs and upgrades with a primary consideration to ensure that the district historical guidelines for the property are met. It was a weekend full of inspiring speakers, practical advice for class officers and reunion chairs, as well as that special camaraderie shared by Cornellians around the globe. Many of us attended the session on Greek life and learned more details about the recent changes in the recruitment process put in place by the university. Kara Miller McCarty, Director of Sorority and Fraternity Life, explained to a room of 100-plus alumni that any individual who desires to participate in recruit- ment is required to participate in an orientation (IFC in-person, PHC online) and bystander intervention training. This orienta- tion covers university expectations, hazing awareness, policies on drug and alcohol use, and policies on sexual and related misconduct. The intervention training includes discussion of micro-aggression, hazing prevention, bystander intervention, and sexual violence awareness. The educational and intervention training takes about an hour or two and was seen by some alumni as an extra barrier for recruitment. The new program has decreased the number of men and women going through recruitment, but one current student from IFC noted that the students participating were more likely to join since they were already more committed to going through the process. Others felt this was valuable training that should be required of ALL new Cornell students, not just those exploring Greek life.
