COLLEGIATE CALENDAR L ast fall our Chapter awarded Ashleigh Bickford '17 with the Lambda Chapter of Chi Omega Study Abroad Scholarship. The scholarship was established by Steve and Jan Lemons Heck '92 to assist Lambda members with their study abroad programs. As an applied behavior science major with an emphasis in global and international studies, Ashleigh was a perfect candidate for this scholarship. This scholarship will help fund her summer internship program in Seoul, South Korea. Ashleigh will be interning in the social welfare sector, while gaining international and cultural experience. Ashleigh's mother was adopted from Seoul at a very young age. In addition to the invaluable international work experience Ashleigh will gain, she will have the opportunity to learn about her heritage while living in Seoul. We are so grateful for the Hecks who provided the scholarship that will assist Ashleigh with this opportunity. Save the Date Norma Jeanne is turning 90! See page 1 for information L ambda lost one of its most loyal sisters and patrons on March 23: Barbara Moffett Long '45. Barbara dedicated much time and energy to our sorority over the years, serving on the house corporation board for most of the 1980s. House renovations, fund raising, scholarship committees, recruitment, and newsletters are just some of her involvements. "There wasn't an inch of that house that she didn't touch in some way," said her daughter Anne Long Phillips '83. Barbara grew up in Kansas City, but didn't come to KU until 1944, transferring as a junior from Mills College in Oakland, California. Always ahead of her time, granddaughter Natalie Phillips described her as "the original feminist." Not only was it unusual for a woman to attend college in her day, she moved halfway across the country to do so, attending what was then known as the Vassar of the West. After a pursuing a public relations career in the oil industry in Houston, Barbara married Clabe Long, a grandson of a Texas Ranger and a larger than life personality himself. They settled in Fairway, Kansas, where they reared their only daughter, Anne. Over the years, the Longs would be involved in cattle ranching, the oil business, race horses, and their mainstay: a manufacturer's representative business for several home improvement lines. Barbara joined the house corporation board shortly before Anne left for KU in 1982. Anne joked that many of the projects her mother worked on were inspired by her "grumbling." After an especially hot summer, the board started fund raising for air conditioning. When Anne found herself cramped in one of the smallest rooms in the house (now the Barbara Long Suite), efforts began for a south wing bedroom renovation. Anne said, "If mom saw a need for something, she'd figure out a way to get it done." She continued her involvement with Lambda into the early 2000s. "She had an undying love for her sorority." So important was Chi O to Barbara, that Anne felt a singing of Shades was in order at the funeral reception March 29. Adieu Barbara Moffett Long; we'll remember you.
