Along with joining Sigma Chi and playing football at Cal, Ed majored in environmental design and excelled in numerous art classes. Ed's passion for art carried on throughout his football playing and coaching career and now occupies much of his time during retirement. Between living with his wife in Julian, Calif., in the Cuyamaca mountains and going on various trips, Ed enjoys documenting what he sees through his artwork. You can check out Ed's artwork at https://www.edwhiteart.com/. "Being one with nature and the animals that are more closely accessed in the mountains is fantastic. It's a big part of what I am and what I do," Ed said. "I try to do my art connecting to where I'm at in the moment. Now I'm going through a little bit more of an abstract, architectural, lineal, col- orful mode." While Ed has loved living in the moment with his paintings, he also uses them to remember important moments of the past. Ed has thoroughly il- lustrated his football career and makes sculptures for John Madden's all- pro team, the Chargers, and athletic hall of fames of San Diego State and the University of San Diego. If Ed had to pick a favorite piece, though, it would be the painting he did of the 1964 Peace and Freedom March through Sproul Plaza on the UC-Berkeley campus that he did for former Cal Alumni Association Executive Director Tuck Coop. In his artwork, football career, and everything else Ed has accomplished in life, he is thankful for everything his family did to put him in a position to be successful. Ed is proud that the positive environment that he grew up in also led to what has been an extraordinary medical career for his brother, Paul White '70. "Paul is kind of a renowned doctor and professor and has ran departments of anesthesiology," Ed said. "He's very accomplished and smart. I was just raised in that kind of environment and I think that that instills a lot in you." 2 THE CAL SIG FROM ATHLETE TO ARTIST (Continued from page 1) F or those who I have not had the opportunity to meet, my name is Paul Stella, UC Davis '97, and I am the new chapter advisor for Alpha Beta in fall 2018. I am a graduate of UC Davis and was initiated at the Theta Omicron Chapter in October 1990. I live in San Ramon, Calif., and look forward to meeting as many Alpha Beta alumni as I can. I previously assisted former Chapter Advisor Milton Del Tacconi, Utah State '62, and have been involved with chapter recruitment and initiations for the last five years. The chapter is at an interesting point in time. If you watch the news and read articles in the paper and online, you are aware that the Greek system is under a microscope. Recurring themes including alcohol, sexual harassment, and hazing are what we, as Sigma Chi and members of the Greek system, are dealing with on a regular basis. Sigma Chi has taken a stand against these issues and has worked on developing a process to help our survival in this new environment. Nothing is guaranteed and because of that, we need our alumni to participate and support the undergraduates now more than ever before. The current environment has made recruitment challenging. That, coupled with the number of brothers living in the house, has made for a struggle financially. The chapter is working on ways to address the financial issues with our Housing Corporation and we are hopeful to find middle ground. Our past consul, Evan Blaney '20, and past pro consul, Xu-Bin Kuang '20, did an outstanding job working with the campus and community to repair damage done to our reputation on campus through public allegations that were made against the chapter. Our new executive team, headed by Consul Kaelen Nettleship '21 and Pro Consul Canberk Hurel '21, is working to build upon the momentum started by their predecessors, but we still have an uphill battle. We would welcome the opportunity to see more alumni at recruitment and alumni events, especially initiations. Please email me at paulstellamortgage@gmail.com with your name, best email address, mailing address, and best contact number so that I can create an updated spreadsheet to make sure that invitations to events are sent to all Alpha Beta alumni. The chapter is made up of extremely talented young men who will go on to do great things, much like all of you have done. My job as Chapter Advisor is to assist the chapter in experiencing and taking advantage of all that Sigma Chi has to offer them, such as leadership and scholarship opportunities and, most importantly, the ability to share in the ideals of friendship, justice, and learning that our great organization affords all of us.
