Hair, Nails, and Pedicure Services I remember the fi rst time I stood up to my step-father telling him, "No." I ended up on the fl oor with a dis- jointed jaw that causes me problems to this day. The universe gave me a gift; because I will always remem- ber that moment when I fi rst took a stand against oppression and began reclaiming my voice. I could have allowed myself to be paralyzed by the fear raised from that experience. But I chose another path, the one of learning how to communicate in a peaceful manner. All throughout history, people have faced adversity and come out victo- rious but only because they faced up to the pain and if you choose to do the same you will be surprised when you come out on top. Have you ever felt like a doormat? • Saying no doesn't mean that you are being rude, selfi sh, or unkind. • Realize that you are valuable and choosing your own opinion about yourself over others. If you live your life depending on other people's ap- proval, you will never feel free and truly happy. • Is it really worth it? This step to learning to say no is deciding if say- ing yes is really worth it. • Practice saying no. "No" period. Imagine a scenario and then practice saying no either by yourself or with a friend. This will get you feeling a lot more comfortable with saying no. • Be direct, such as "no, I can't" or "no, I don't want to." • Don't apologize and give all sorts of reasons. • Don't lie. Lying will most likely lead to guilt—and remember, this is what you are trying to avoid feeling. • Remember that it is better to say no now than be resentful later. When you learn to say YES to the good stuff by saying NO to all the other stuff, you will develop clarity in your life and compassion for others. "If something is not a 'hell, YEAH!', then it's a 'no!'" ~ James Altucher
