(AP) California coach Mike Montgomery said Tuesday there was no excuse for him shoving his star player during a game and that the action was completely out of character for him. The fact was, I was wrong, Montgomery said on a Pac12 conference call Tuesday. Looking back, you cant do that. Montgomery has been publicly reprimanded by the Pac-12 conference and his own athletic director for pushing Allen Crabbe with both hands during a timeout in the second half of Cals 76-68 win over Southern California on Sunday night. After initially downplaying the event by calling it a motivational tactic and saying he would do it again because it worked, Montgomery issued an apology statement later that night and then expanded on that Tuesday. Chico (16-3-1) played the role of the aggressor early with six strong chances on goal in the first half, but Tabitha Gibson, Red Bluffs feisty goal keeper, kept the Spartans (12-3-2) in the game with some remarkable saves. A scoreless first half quickly turned into a Red Bluff advantage in the second as senior midfielder Laurel Shoop scored a goal in the 42nd minute off a short cross. For the first time since arbitration began in 1974, none of the players who filed wound up arguing their cases. After peaking at 35 hearings in 1986, the number of salary arbitration cases argued hasnt reached double digits since 2001. The total dropped to a record low of three in 2005, 2009 and 2011, and then there were none at all this year. All 133 players who filed last month settled, gaining an average increase of 119 percent, according to a study by The Associated Press. San Francisco catcher Buster Posey, the NL batting champion and MVP, led the way with a 13-fold hike to $8 million. While I do believe that this year was an aberration, the salary structure for arbitration-eligible players has become more well-defined over the last decade or so as clubs and player agents have become more sophisticated in valuing players, MLB senior vice president Dan Halem said. That factor, combined with the relatively recent trend of locking up prearbitration and arbitration-eligible players to multiyear contracts, prob- See POSEY, page 2B DAILY NEWS RED BLUFF TEHAMA COUNTY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Red Bluff Lady Spartans Corning Cardinals Basketball Soccer If you can believe it, the mind can achieve it.
