For seven exciting seasons, the vigilante Green Arrow has kept the citizens of Starling City safe from all manner of dangers, plots and schemes, but it's almost time for the hero to unstring his bow and enjoy retirement. CW's "Arrow" returns from a brief hiatus on Monday, April 15 with only a few episodes left in its seventh season. Stephen Amell ("Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows," 2016) stars as billionaire playboy Oliver Queen, the man who moonlights as the secretive Green Arrow. If the hero really wants to clean up Starling City, though, he'd better finish the job quickly: he's running out of time. The series has been renewed for an eighth season, but that will be its last — it's the end of the line for Black Canary (Juli- ana Harkavy, "The Walking Dead"), Wild Dog (Rick Gonza- lez, "Coach Carter," 2005), Spar- tan (David Ramsey, "Dexter") and the rest of the show's array of allies and enemies, but it's definitely not the end of the shared universe the show sparked. Based on a comic book series, "Arrow" has inspired an entire franchise of shows based on DC Comics characters. "The Flash," "Supergirl" and "Legends of To- morrow" have all received re- newals for another season, and none of them show any signs of ending any time soon. While "Arrow" does have an- other season to go, it will be an abbreviated one. In a second dose of disappointing news for fans, it's been announced that the show's last season will con- sist of only 10 episodes, a big drop from the 23 that's typical for the series. Still, with the show's writers knowing so far in advance when the show will end, they have ample opportunity to make sure that Oliver Queen's story ends with a satisfying bang. "Arrow" currently airs Monday nights on CW. More magic: There's magic lingering in the air. "The Magi- cians" has both enchanted and shocked audiences in equal measure for four seasons on Syfy, and with a fifth season or- dered, it looks like the captivat- ing spell that it's cast over its fans won't be lifted any time soon. Jason Ralph ("Aquarius") stars as Quentin Coldwater, a young man with an obsessive love for a series of children's fantasy nov- els. He learns that the magical world described in these novels is, in fact, real when he is recruit- ed to Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy. Over four critically acclaimed seasons, he and his classmates have faced down one supernatural danger after another, while also dealing with all the drama that comes with being college students. "We couldn't be happier or more excited to conjure another year of magic and all it entails — love, hate, loyalty, betrayal, sex, foul language, drugs, battling gods, monsters and the most dangerous enemies of all: other human beings," executive pro- ducers and co-showrunners John McNamara and Sera Gam- ble said in a statement announc- ing the new season. The show, which is based on a series of novels by Lev Gross- man, also stars Stella Maeve ("Chicago P.D."), Hale Apple- man ("Smash"), Arjun Gupta ("Nurse Jackie"), Summer Bishil ("The Last Airbender," 2010) and Olivia Taylor Dudley ("Aquarius"). With the current season of "The Magicians" just ending, the wait is on for the next one, which should premiere early in 2020. Watch for it next year on Syfy. Second friends: It's the sea- son for renewals, and CBS hasn't been slacking off on that front. It recently gave the go-ahead to start production on the second seasons of four freshman series. "Magnum P.I.," "The Neigh- borhood," "FBI" and "God Friended Me" all premiered back in the fall to strong audi- ence numbers, and they've maintained momentum through a competitive season, making it pretty unsurprising that they are all getting sophomore outings next fall. In fact, "FBI" is the most-watched new series on the network, but "God Friended Me" isn't far behind. That's an especially impres- sive feat for "God Friended Me," considering its time-slot. Sun- day evening isn't traditionally a strong one for TV ratings, but the religion-themed dramedy has succeeded in carving out a fiercely loyal audience. Brandon Micheal Hall ("The Mayor") leads the cast as an atheist pod- caster whose life is turned up- side down when God adds him as a friend on Facebook, sending him friend suggestions that al- ways turn out to be people whose lives he can improve. Admittedly, it sounds like a sil- ly concept that borders on blas- phemy, but its mix of drama with lighthearted humor somehow works, and it's resonated well with audiences. Along with its fellow rookie series, "God Friended Me" will be back with more friend requests next fall on CBS.
