THE DELTA NEWS 3 DELTA NU CHAPTER OF ALPHA TAU OMEGA S eth Sherlock '14, the son of a farmer, thought he had no need for Greek life aer getting his first look at UND. But aer meeting Nate Schroeder '13 in his biology class, Nate's persistence and constant grin won Seth over. "Eventually I made Nate a promise, if he was elected president of ATW, I would join. I consider myself a man of my word, so when Nate informed me he had just won the presidency position, I joined shortly thereaer. Retrospectively, I consider that casual promise to be one of the best decisions I ever made." Once Seth pledged to Delta Nu, he held the office of vice scholarship chairman, which eventually led him to lead as scholarship chairman. During his tenure, the position rose to a more proactive role with initiatives set into motion to ensure brothers were given resources and support systems to stay focused academically and to improve their grades. Seth is thankful for the experiences he shared with his brothers through Delta Nu. "Marshall Swenson '13, Tyler Titcomb '13, Tyler Hartmann '13, Alex Lewis '13, and Kyle Saner '14 were all instrumental in making me feel more normal as they all understood some of the more rural aspects of my character and could relate to my experiences growing up." One such fraternity experience that brings Seth an immense sense of pride is his work with Safe Kids, the chapter's major community service project. "I remem- ber similar programs from my time in elementary school and it gives me a sense of fulfillment to see I have come full circle, now as a presenter." e brotherhood guided Seth on who he wanted to be as an adult. "e study habits and leadership skills I learned, com- bined with a real feel of community, gave me the foundation to graduate and ultimately be accepted into medical school." Seth was also grounded by some of the hardest lessons in leadership: recognizing when to quit, when it's time to move on, and experiencing failure does not mean you are a fail- ure. "Because of Delta Nu, I reaped the benefit of friendships who allowed me to really test the waters to discover what I enjoyed without fear of abandonment." "e most important skill I learned from Nate and Delta Nu is that you don't have to be stern or boring to be effective at what you do. Part of life is learning how to balance the professional and personal sides of your char- acter. I remain ever thankful to Nate and Delta Nu for molding me into the man I am today." We will contract with a real estate manager to handle issues related to the physical facility, as well as to provide for a live-in house manager, likely a graduate student or older, who will reside in the house and provide daily supervision and regular reporting responsibilities to the Board of Trustees. Recruitment Recruitment is also a high priority for the Board of Trustees and the Alum- ni Board, as well as the chapter. We are assisting the undergraduates to seek out high-caliber young men to be considered for membership in Delta Nu. Scholars, athletes, and all-around talented high school seniors who have indicated an interest in attending UND will be targeted. We are committed in chartering a path for success, but the new chapter house will be the cornerstone.
