In the rear of the home, guests will
find one of Jesse's favorite rooms – the
sun room, formerly an expansive deck,
which highlights the lush vegetation of
the hilly back yard. When Irene became
ill with lung cancer, she could no longer
be outside. So Jesse brought the outside
to her. "I made the decision to have the
deck enclosed," he said. Now, "everyone
always ends up out there."

competition for the breathtaking
view. Jesse's sun room collection of
paintings ranges from a floral by
North Carolinian Ann Stewman to
a depiction of a very happy spotted
dog to a lively citrus painting by his
granddaughter, Jessica. e room is
also filled with colorful furnishings
and accessories, from a fanciful teapot
to the bold floral upholstery on an
arm chair to the replicas of fruits and
vegetables found in bowls and artful
pieces.
"Aside from the people that live in
it, the thing that most makes a house a
home is experimenting with art," Jesse
said.

Jesse Byrd grew up in Linden. In his
youth, his parents renovated a home
in a Mount Vernon style. Loosely
based on Palladian architecture, a
Mount Vernon is usually a two-story
home with an impressive colonnade,
full porch, dormers and a cupola
– elements that span the history of
architecture, but which combine to be
classically southern. "I guess that had a
whole lot to do with what appealed to
me," he said. "If you like it, that sticks
with you."
He recalled a crasman who did a
