INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by BILL BOWMAN May 31st will be a really sad day for the Fayetteville/ Cumberland County community. That’s when the Fayetteville Museum of Art will close its doors because of a lack of fi nancial support. How sad. To me and many others, this is just another example of how mutually beneficial organizations in our community again have failed to effectively communicate with each other. Only in Fayetteville would related entities refuse to arbitrate such a sensitive issue. Especially one this important that affects our community image and quality of life. It’s sad to know that with all the progress and wonderful things taking place in our community, we still lack the civility and sophistication to seek out and fi nd “common ground” to resolve our differences. This is disturbing. We need the refl ects a sense of sophistication and gives our community a humanitarian balance. Without art, well, you are just “without.” I have no idea of what the outcome of all this will be, however, I do know this: Our cultural, civic and governmental leaders, at all levels, have let this community down by allowing this to happen. Unfortunately, we have again managed to embarrass ourselves at a time when many individuals, families and businesses are scrutinizing and evaluating us trying to determine if they want to come to live, work and invest in the Fayetteville/Cumberland County community (BRAC). Should they? Clearly, as a community, we have not yet defi ned who or what we want to be. The reality of it is that if we don’t fi nd the answer soon, and initiate a serious action plan to get there, I’m afraid tragic situations like this will continue to defi ne it for us. May 31 will be a really sad Fayetteville Museum of Art. Visual arts defi ne a community. The sights, sounds and activities of a stable cultural arts presence refl ect positively on our community, our residents and our leadership. The cultural arts en instill confi dence, attract commerce, industry and economic development. Sadly, unless the community comes together, that era has come to an end. Shown above, FMA Director Tom Grubb and museum patrons. day for Fayetteville. We still have time to remedy this situation. The question is, will we? Ego’s aside, let’s hope the ART of common sense prevails. Mona Lisa is not smiling anymore. Thank you for reading. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher. COMMENTS?
