This is double the amount sent by other chapters and is an extraordinary show of commitment by our local chapter. The chapter sent all of its elected leaders and one "shadow" for each. A shadow is a younger member, usually a freshman, who has been identified as an emerging chapter leader. The Carlson Leadership Academy is designed to help elected chapter leaders to better understand the scope of their responsibilities and to improve leadership skills and practices. A chapter can only benefit when more men are better equipped to be effective leaders. The ongoing implementation of SigEp's Substance-Free Facility policy was an overarching theme of the entire weekend. This is because the fraternity is halfway through a three- year implementation process with a goal of having all SigEp chapters operate a substance- free facility no later than August 2020. As you can imagine, this type of major change in operations has presented some cultural pushback and implementation challenges. The men at CA Delta are no different. So, it was very helpful that the guys came away with a better understanding of the need for standards and accountability, peer supervision, and how to implement non- alcohol related programming. It is extremely important to the long-term health and existence of CA Delta and SigEp to successfully implement the substance-free culture. We simply won't be able to afford, or maybe even find, liability coverage without substance-free facilities. And even if we do, universities are becoming increasingly less willing to tolerate irresponsible risk management practices and to expose themselves to alcohol- fueled risk. MacNeil and Joyner Scholarships Benefit Outstanding Members Give Today and Help Deserving Brothers Fund Their Education T he CA Delta AVC launched the third annual scholarship cycle for the Tim MacNeil Memorial Scholarship and the second annual Lt. Steve Joyner Memorial Scholarship. Brothers MacNeil and Joyner (both from the class of 1966) made significant contributions to the chapter, SDSU, our community, and nation. MacNeil served as a highly respected attorney in San Diego, and Joyner was a Marine Corps officer who died in combat during the Vietnam War. Both of these scholarships began with a generous lead gift from CA Delta Brother Dennis Tilton '66 and have been supported by other giving alumni. The recipient of each scholarship receives a $1,000 award. The AVC solicits applications in early spring then conducts finalist interviews in April. Each award is a little different, but both look for mature members with strong scholarship, chapter and campus leadership, and outstanding citizenship. The ultimate goal for these scholarships is to seek annual gifts, such that each program becomes self-funding in perpetuity.
