SIGMA NEWS A PUBLICATION OF THE GAMMA CHI CHAPTER OF SIGMA NU UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON s SPRING 2019 I t has been an unusual but fulfilling quarter at Gamma Chi. All officer transitions have gone smoothly, and I am glad to report that all officers are settling into their roles. I inherited a healthy, fine-tuned machine when I took over as Eminent Commander. e goals I created at College of Chapters align closely with the needs of the Gamma Chi Chapter. Everyone is on board, from officers to members to our alumni advisory board, and even our local Interfraternity Council. We are proud of our growth and continue to look forward. At our local IFC Greek Awards night in January, our chapter was awarded with Excellence in Recruitment and Andrew MacKinnon '16 was named as the President of the Year. ese are completely characteristic of our growth as a consistent, solid chapter. My primary goal that I share with every one of my brothers, outside of the goals previously mentioned, is to catalyze this growth. I also mentioned it being an unusual quarter. It has not just been unusual for us, but for every student at the University of Washington. There have been four-and-a-half days of class canceled due to snow so far, resulting in midterm dates and assignment due dates being moved. The brothers have used this opportunity to both catch up on studies and spend quality time with one another. Few things bring us closer than a good snowball fight. Everyone was glad to be able to take a couple days off, whether it be for work or for play. The future of the Gamma Chi Chapter is brighter than it has ever looked in my time as a brother. I am excited to see what spring and summer have in store for us, as our recruitment really begins to ramp up. We have set a firm foundation regarding recruitment, where we can consistently seek out a new pledge class of around 25 scholarly individuals whose values closely align with those of Sigma Nu. We have experienced equal success in all areas of the Pursuit of Excellence. We are on the brink of qualifying for Rock Chapter. Our philanthropy, risk management, and alumni development are all excellent. Only academic and candidate development are lagging behind. We have revamped policies in place for both and are no longer adhering to bad habits of putting grades on the backburner. Grades have become a central focus and improving them is the first goal I created. For candidates, I have worked with the marshal to establish executive council leadership roles within each pledge class. This will help to cultivate leaders early in their time in the house. Gamma Chi Chapter has already experienced immense success in the past year and a half, and with these improvements, we will continue to succeed.
