MARCH 27-APRIL 2, 2019 UCW 27 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Going out in style Drivers along southbound In- terstate 880 in Hayward, Califor- nia, were pleasantly surprised on March 4 when they saw $20 bills flying through the air. Some mo- torists stopped to collect as many as they could, but the mystery lay in where they came from. The next day, members of a family, who wished to remain anonymous, admitted to KTVU that they tossed $500 worth of bills into the air as they drove back from a funeral; the unexpected windfall was in- tended to honor their deceased family member. It's an "Oakland thing," one person explained. [KTVU, 3/5/2019] Religious interpretation Brewery worker Del Hall of Newtown, Ohio, is taking an un- usual approach to fasting for Lent this year. Hall, who works at the Fifty West brewery in Dayton, is going on an all-beer-only-beer diet until Easter. He told WKRC- TV that monks from the 1600s inspired him. "(T)hey would take a popular style of beer in Ger- many, bock beer, make it extra hearty and that would be their liquid bread, and that's what they call it," Hall said. He is, however, including all types of beer in his Lenten fast. "(T)his seems very daunting," Hall noted. "I'm just curious if I'm up to the challenge." He is planning to check in with his doctor during the fast. [WKRC, 3/11/2019] Scrooge report As Clayton Lucas, 25, was being transported through East Deer Township, Pennsylvania, from a halfway house to a treatment class on the morning of March 4 (69 days after Christmas), the van driver regaled him with Christmas songs. Turns out Lucas isn't a fan of holiday tunes, so he reached into the front seat and began choking the unnamed driver, who was strangled almost to the point of losing consciousness, according to police. KDKA reported that an- other driver flagged down a state trooper and alerted him about an altercation happening on the shoulder of the highway. After a struggle to get handcuffs on Lucas, the officer deposited him in the Allegheny County Jail, where he will face multiple charges. Question: What's the latest with "Law & Order: Hate Crimes?" Could "L&O:HC" be the latest in a long line of potential new programs that re- ceived a lot of buzz but for whatever reason never made it to air? — Alex Matt Roush: Recently, it was re- ported that the "SVU" spinoff has been indefinitely delayed. A "back- door" pilot had been planned to air within an episode of "SVU" this sea- son to launch a spinoff about a Hate Crimes unit, but that's no longer hap- pening during the current season. I wouldn't count it out from hap- pening eventually, and it may even be encouraging that they didn't rush it to air, giving more time for the develop- ment and casting process. It's a very topical but loaded subject, and I'd like to see them get it right. (But with Dick Wolf 's company looking to expand the CBS FBI franchise while main- taining so many other productions in New York and Chicago, they clearly have a full plate.) Question: Why are all of the "Hawaii Five-O" episode titles in Hawaiian languages? Speaking true Hawaiian is not common. — Don S. Matt Roush: Isn't that reason enough to do it? Looking past the two white male leads who were built into the formula, "Hawaii Five-O" has tried from the start to honor and reflect Hawaiian culture, and the epi- sode titles are part of that. I dig it. To submit questions to TV Critic Matt Roush, go to: tvinsider.com. by Damian Holbrook Cheers to "Grey's Anatomy" for mak- ing it to puberty. Fifteen seasons ago, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) scrubbed in to her internship, and we are still picking, choosing and loving her as the ABC series becomes TV's longest- running primetime medical drama. Jeers to MTV for stifling their "Scream." Round 3 of the horror adap- tation — which was designed to reboot the franchise with a cast including Ty- ler Posey and Mary J. Blige — wrapped over a year ago and there's still no pre- miere date. Did Ghostface kill this too?
