Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested Purdue Reminds Students to "Make the Call" A Brief History of the University's Medical Amnesty Policy L ast year, the presidents of Purdue's Greek student councils published a report on the "Path Moving Forward" for Greek life in West Lafayette. Among the recommendations and expectations for fraternities, sororities, and cooperative houses on campus was a reminder of three important words: "MAKE THE CALL." is simple but important phrase refers to Purdue University's policy of medical amnesty, which is offered to both students who call for medical at- tention and the students receiving treatment. e policy, which applies to ALL community organi- zations (not just Greek life), was adapted from the Indiana Lifeline Law, which offers similar le- gal protections to individuals who identify them- selves to, and cooperate with, law enforcement while seeking medical help for alcohol-related health emergencies. If a student organization is believed to be involved in such incidents, "Mak- ing the Call" will serve as a mitigating circum- stance when it comes to disciplinary action. In 2012, Purdue students and staff published a video explaining the "Make the Call" poli- cy, identifying signs of alcohol poisoning, and encouraging students to reach out in such a situation. e video was made in response to troubling data showing that students would pre- viously respond to alcohol poisoning by simply monitoring a passed-out student—during which time a person's blood alcohol concentration can keep rising—and stressed the importance of prompt medical attention. In the wake of high-profile tragedies such as those at Penn State and Florida State, it is crucial that students, faculty, and alumni urge respon- sible practices, and that everyone feels safe to seek help should an emergency arise. Your safety is what's most important, so please, if you need help, Make the Call!
