Page 2 Beta Tidings A s a freshman, Steven M. Schreiber '96 developed a strong first impression of Beta Chapter through the bonds of friendship. "My friend and roommate, Greg Chiaramonte '96, was a Beta Sig leg- acy; both of his older brothers were Beta Chapter alumni," Steve recalls. "That connection got me visiting the Chapter House early on, and I had a great bond with all the brothers—so I pledged right away." Beta Sigma Psi gave Steve brotherhood and mentorship, leading him on the right path to a great family life and career success. Looking for the Right Fit In his early undergraduate years, Steve joined the Air Force ROTC but found himself dissatisfied. A fellow brother Steve looked up to, Matt Ort '94, was in the Navy ROTC, so Steve reached out to him about possibly changing programs. "Matt was a great mentor and encouraged me to join the Marine PLC program, thinking I would be better suited for that path." Looking back, Steve realizes this was the right choice for him, leading him to a thrilling career in the Marines. Steve is now an active duty lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps and an AV-8B Harrier pilot by trade. His most recent position was as a command- ing officer of a Marina Attack Squadron in Cherry Point, N.C., where he oversaw 252 Marines and 18 Harriers. One unique highlight during his tour with the squadron was the opportunity to train with the Norwegian Special Forces at their base north of the Arctic Circle, within a few hundred miles of the Russian Border. The squadron also deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve out of Isa Bahrain, conducting combat missions against ISIS forces in Syria and Iraq. Growing Up with Beta Sig Steve served as treasurer and first vice president and has great memories of spending time with his brothers in the Chapter House—particularly through Mulberry and attending football games after breakfast club. "In Chapter meetings, we often fought passionately for the things we wanted to accomplish for Beta Chapter; we all had different backgrounds, but Chap- ter improvement was a common goal. We accomplished our goals through Becoming Part of Something Bigger Steve Schreiber '96 Reflects on Beta Sig Values Steve Schrieber '96 during his time as the military aide to President Barack Obama. compromise and respect, even though we didn't always agree." About once a year, Steve, Eric Gebert '96, Greg Chiaramonte '96, and their families get together, always having a great time. The Future of Beta Chapter While Steve hasn't visited the Chapter House as recently as he would like, he had an opportunity to speak to the Purdue football team in 2015 and visit the Chapter that same weekend. "I had a great impression of the brothers and am proud to call myself an alumnus." He encourages the active Chap- ter to enjoy their time in college with the brotherhood, and to search for the career that makes them happy in life. "In our society, it seems fashionable to denigrate fraternities, and even young folks in general," Steve says. "But I can tell you that serving with young people every day gives me faith. They work incredibly hard for our country and community; I saw those same characteristics at Beta Chapter in 2015. This brotherhood helped me realize that being part of something bigger than myself was so important to me. Good luck and godspeed to the men of Beta Sigma Psi." Steve and his wife have three children: a daughter and two sons. In his spare time between work and family, Steve enjoys boating, hiking, run- ning, and reading.
