3 The Golden Heart George Fedoroff '67 Highlight of past year: I completed writing a biography with two co-authors, Admiral Gorshkov - The Man Who Chal- lenged the US Navy. He was the man responsible for the buildup of the Soviet Navy as a global force. Secondly, I wrote an unclassified publication on the Rus- sian Navy issuing by the Office of Naval Intelligence, "The RUSSIAN NAVY - A Historical Transition." Fondest family memory: Detailed, viv- id descriptions from parents and grand- mother of life in the "old country." They emigrated to the U.S. via China in the ear- ly 1920s as a result of "unpleasantness" in Russia during WWI, Russian Revolution, Russian Civil War. Characteristic of best boss: Insistence on attention to detail and critical quality of analysis. Stern, but fair, judgement of performance (essential for professional support to naval and national security decision-makers). I have tried to emulate this in the course of my career. One skill I'd like to learn: To more seriously learn French. Thus far, I can do menus and won't starve in Paris. Current languages are English and Russian (mother told me I learned English in kindergarten growing up in San Francisco). Catching Up with CA Alpha Check Out What Our Alumni Are Up To! Dean Yao '97 Highlight of past year: I head marketing for Jinfonet Software, which was recently acquired by Logi Analytics to bolster their embedded analytics software products. In short, we provide reporting, dashboard, and analytics capabilities for software vendors to embed into their applications. Moving forward, I will help Logi Analytics combine operations of the two businesses. My wife, Karina, and I are based in San Francisco with our kids: Mathias (5) and Solveig (1). Life slogan: "Never assume." One goal to accomplish this year: Volunteer at different non-profits with my 5-year-old son at least four times this year. What characteristic do you value the most in your coworkers? People that have a high attention to detail and who just "get it." If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you want to have with you? A 12-inch blade. A bottle of Michter's 25 year. A boat. What soothes your spirit when you are unhappy or in a bad mood? Bourbon. What was your fondest SigEp memory from when you were in the chapter? Pledge semester with my pledge brothers: Arun Dayalan '97, Shua Chai '97, Eric Moncada '99, James Henrikson '96, Ted Callagy '96, and Fred Gerringer '98. Most pledge activities were hilarious and there was one where we were encouraged to run to different pay phones (coin-oper- ated phones) that the other brothers called across campus. Right: SigEps cap off the fall semester with a night of celebration at SF Creamery in Walnut Creek, Calif.
