Dedicated to the Men & Women of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Missouri Gamma Chapter and Named in Memory of Our Enthusiastic Brother Wilbert "Beartracks" Burton and his wife Daisy BEARTRACKS Missouri Gamma Chapter Alumni Newsletter S I G M A P H I E P S I L O N Winter 2019 G reetings! Several changes occurred in December at the MO Gamma Alumni Board's annual meeting. Brother Mike Kearney '61 decided several months ago to step away from the board, and with sadness we ac- cepted that he would not run for reelection as director. Mike's heart for Sigma Phi Epsilon and our Chapter is unmatched. A special electronic Beartracks was issued in December that included Mike's "It's Time," an au- tobiography of his SigEp life. Details on a scholarship endowed in his name for the Chapter's intramural athlete of the year will follow this spring. If we don't have your email address or you didn't receive the special edition email Beartracks, you can review the special edition at the following link: https://cdn.emailer.emfluence.com/ clients/penningtonco/uploadedfiles/PDF_Files/Mike_ Kearney_Beartracks.pdf. It is a must read! Mike Hurst '74 also decided to step back as president of the board in December, and he was elected as secretary and will continue as housing chairman in 2019. Mike did an outstanding job leading the house remodeling in 2011 and as president for the last six years. His leadership has been exemplary, and he deserves much of the credit for the success of MO Gamma over the last decade. He set a high bar that I will strive to meet. The corporation also voted to amend our bylaws to bring them into compliance with national's recommendation. These changes were designed to reduce the risk to the corporation and required that the undergraduate Chapter presi- dent, Chapter counselor, and the balanced man steward not be di- rectors. Accordingly, Ray Zesch '70 and Morgan Schenk '20 were not reelected to the alumni board. However, Ray, Morgan and Ed Clausen (Chapter counselor) will participate in our board meetings so that they have an opportunity for their input to be heard. Dave Braun '79 and John Welte '72 join John Parks '64, Mike Hurst '74, Mike Schmidt '75, Dennis Stanfield '71, and me as directors for 2019. As we move forward in 2019, our finances are improving following the renovation of the 508 property and we remain committed to maintaining the house in like-new condition for our undergraduate brothers. Over the semester break, the second and third floor shower room floors were replaced to eliminate water drainage and leakage issues. ALUMNI BOARD GOALS n Lead Alumni on Substance-Free Facility (SFF) Acceptance n Support Chapter in Successful SFF Implementation n Recruit Additional Alumni Participation n Develop Long-Term Capital/Financial Plan Finally, the Chapter is in excellent shape as you will read about in other sections of Beartracks. They finished first in intramurals and first in grade point average among fra- ternities. At the officer transition retreat in December, we had the opportunity to discuss fall performance, spring goals, and meet the newly elect- ed officers of the Chapter. Over $11,000 of performance-based scholarships were awarded to an impressive group of outgoing of- ficers and an equally impressive group of new officers are ready to lead a great Chapter. To borrow again from Brother Kearney— "Best Day for MO Gamma."
