This year's national theme is Grow, and it celebrates more than 80 years of FFA traditions while eagerly anticipating the organization's future. More than 550,000 members nationwide will participate in National FFA Week activities at local, state and national levels. These members come from rural, suburban and urban environments and are interested in the diversity of careers within agriculture. FFA members are the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. Through agricultural education and hands-on learning, they National FFA Week eScholar Academy, on Jackson Street in Red Bluff, recently opened its doors to adults seeking to improve their circumstances by getting their high school diploma or GED. "We see a real need in our community to provide adult education," said Dr. Harold Vietti, executive director at eScholar. "Most jobs now require a high school diploma or GED at a minimum and not having this can really hinder one's ability to be successful. We're dedicated to uplifting the community and helping our students to be the best they can be." The adult program is free and open to any local adult who is in need of a GED or high school diploma. "We don't want cost to be a barrier to education," Vietti said. In the first week alone, staff at eScholar saw about 50 adult students show up to start the process. Students at Sacramento River Discovery Charter School are getting ready for college and career in their College Readiness class, led by teacher Carly Martinez. "We are working hard on raising achievement of all learners in our county and of course this includes adult learners who, because of life's circumstances, need to increase their proficiency in one or more academic areas," said Larry Champi- on, Tehama County superintendent. "We are delighted that this opportunity is now available for adult learners in Tehama County." The motto at eScholar, "any time, any place, any pace" is appealing to students and their families, who can choose to do 100 percent of their school work online, or they can come in and get individual help from onsite tutors during speci- fied times throughout the week. "Our students are in charge of their own education and we're here to support them," Vietti said. eScholar Academy is now in its 11th year and is serving about 150 elementary and high school students. Fight California Highway Patrol reported to Corning Police at 8:20 a.m. Thursday receiving information of a fight between two people in a white vehicle at Burger King on Route 99W in Corning. The vehicle was last seen merging onto Interstate 5. An area check was made, but the vehicle was not found. Fire CalFire responded at 8:02 p.m. Thursday to the 16000 block of Bowman Road for reports of a lightning strike-caused vegetation fire. The last unit cleared the fire at 11:14 p.m. Nothing further was available.
