BETA BETA CHAPTER of ALPHA PHI at MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Spring 2019
M
any of us think of the years we spent in East Lansing as a wonderful
time in our lives. Rarely do we consider the history of Alpha Phi and
the women who shaped our chapter.
A Look to the Past
Fortunately, author Jenny Thompson penned our history in Alpha Phi
International Fraternity: The First Fifty Years (1872-1922), where Beta
Beta was on the cusp of forming. Jenny writes that in early 1922, another
chapter "found shelter in the arms of Alpha Phi, a chapter new to us but old
in friendship": Beta Beta Chapter at Michigan Agricultural College. This
new chapter was comprised of the 78 members of the college's Feronian
Literary Society, which was "for thirty years the society of the highest
standing" and the oldest women's organization of its kind.
On Friday, February 17, at the Hotel Kerns in Lansing, 78 women were
initiated, and on Saturday the chapter was presented with its charter,
"finishing the whole with a formal dance as a celebration. Tables were
beautifully decorated with the usual smilax, and with large baskets of dark
red tulips and roses and gray, velvety pussy willows."
We Need Your Help
In 2022, we have the opportunity to celebrate our history in a grand fashion.
Think about it: 100 years of bid days, candle lightings, initiations, tailgates,
Chapter meetings, Formals, and Big/Little reveals. Amazing sisterhood has
graced the hearts of all who are and have been a Beta Beta.
Our rich, long history is cause for celebration. The plans may begin with the
current House Corporation Board, but we want to include your wishes. In
the near future, we will construct a planning committee to kick off the
event. We will be reaching out to alumnae via social media to ask for your
thoughts and ideas. Please consider helping us construct a meaningful and
historic plan.
The Beta Beta sisterhood has changed lives and deserves a grand celebration
in 2022. If you are interested in helping us celebrate, please email me at
ejoymurray@gmail.com and be on the lookout for more communication
from us.
