Quartzsite, AZ - When Jim Shiew was 70 years old, he ran across the coun- try raising funds for to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF.) Now that he's has turned 75, he wants to run "Ac- riss" America, as in "Criss-Cross." A lifelong runner and veteran of the Korean War, Jim wanted to do a long distance run to raise money veterans and their families. Jim has been wintering in Quartzsite for years. He will be leaving town the middle of March to being his run. He will drive his two vehicles to Junction, Texas near the border of Mexico. He parks one vehicle at the end point of a run then runs to the second vehicle, repeating throughout the day. Last time he ran across America, Jim averaged 12 miles a day. To get ready for the run, Jim is running 4-5 miles every other day, but will start running every day soon. He said, "There's only so many miles in these legs; I'm 75 now, so it will be a big accomplishment." The south-to-north route will be 1865 miles. He hopes to complete the run by the middle of September. HOKA Shoes is one of his sponsors, send- ing 8 pairs to get started. SOWF has a mission of "Ensuring full scholarship grants as well as edu- cational and family counseling to the surviving children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty and immediate fi nancial assistance for severely wounded special operations personnel and their families." Jim liked what the organization stood for and decided to dedicate his run to those they support. Special Operations Warrior Foundation only takes 5 percent for administrative costs. http://www.specialops.org. | S RAIN G-B Jim Shiew readies for his Run Acriss America
