February 20, 2019 www.DesertMessenger.com 9 LIVE SMOKE-FREE Second-hand smoke kills 53,000 people a year. It's no longer a busi- ness issue; it's a public emergency. Report Smoke-Free Arizona viola- tions anonymously at www.smoke- freearizona.org or call 928-669-5912. www.QuartzsiteVideos.com Watch Quartzsite Videos @ Museum news On February 20, our 5th and last speaker will be Win Holder, former publisher of Arizona Highways Mag- azine. He will share the fascinating story of how a brochure produced by the Arizona Highway Depart- ment evolved into one of the most respected and revered publications in the world. If you have never seen these wonderful magazines, stop by the library to see a sample of the editions. Back issues are often for sale there as well. The presentation will be at the Community Center at 7 pm. The presentation is co-spon- sored by the Friends of the Library and the Quartzsite Historical Soci- ety, and is made possible by a grant by the Arizona Humanities. Because our speakers have generated a large turn-out this year, we have moved to the Community Center. Be sure to note the change of location. Also on February 20, we are leading a fi eld trip to "The Gold Eye Mine" south of Dome Rock. The owner will give us a tour and tell us about the history. We will meet in the dirt parking lot to the west of the Super 8 Motel at 10:30. Check at the Museum for information on next month's fi eld trip. Participation in our fi eld trips is free for members and $3 for non-members. On February 23 the Quartzsite Historical Society is sponsoring the annual "A Walk in the Past" at the Hi Jolly Cemetery in Quartzsite from 1 pm to 4 pm. Come join in the fun while volunteers share informa- tion through role playing some of Quartzsite's more historic pioneers. The event is free. Trivia Question: When was Quartzsite incorporat- ed? Come to the Museum to learn the answer. No phone calls please. We continue to need volunteers to as- sist with a variety of projects includ- ing exhibit cleaning and inventorying, computer input and general offi ce work, computer maintenance, special projects, docent assistance greeting the public and conducting tours, re- search of additional information re- garding Quartzsite and general main- tenance. We received a grant this year which helps fund the development of some new exhibits, as well. Membership of $10 for a year is encouraged. As a member you will receive e-mail notices of coming events, have free admission to our fi eld trips and have a vote in deci- sions being made regarding the Historical Society and Museum, in addition to helping fund the free Museum. We are a non-profi t historical so- ciety. Visiting the Museum is free, although donations are always wel- come. The Museum is open Wednes- day through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm.. We are located at 161 Main Street (parking in rear). We are next door to Silly Al's. Phone (928)927-5229. E-Mail QHS@TDS.net. We continue our winter hours until late March. Corner of Moon Mt. & Cowell • Quartzsite • 928-927-5400 QUARTZSITE'S ONLY YEAR ROUND SALON - MON-FRI Cheyanne, Debbi, Sheryl, Gayle, Janna, & Linda ARE HERE FOR YOUR OPEN YEAR ROUND! Hair, Nails, and Pedicure Services by Joanne Winer The Town of Quartzsite recently made a proclamation naming the fi rst Saturday in March as Heroes Appreciation Day in Quartzsite, The fi rst celebration of this new event will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019. The event will be held at the new Heroes Bell Gardens inside of Celia's Rainbow Gardens in the Town Park on Plymouth Rd. This area of the Gardens was set aside to honor all the men and women who are in the military, or considered as fi rst responders--law enforcement, fi re dept., search and rescue, ambulance, life fl ight, etc. who put their lives on the line every day for our town and county. Anyone who lives here or spends part of the year here in the winter especially knows how many times the sirens are heard every day and night, knowing that someone needs help and these highly trained responders do all they can to help our town and communities around La Paz County. There will be six monuments built in the Heroes Bell Gardens to honor these groups, and several work sessions will be held over the next few months to get them built. The ceremony on March 2 will be the offi cial groundbreaking for the monuments. Hopefully, by next year at this time, we will have them done and the landscaping fi nished so we can have a dedication ceremony next year. Offi cials from every organization that is to be honored will be invited and hopefully will get involved in the design and building of the monuments. Volunteers from each group are needed to help as well as any others who would like to be part of this very special project. Several fundraisers will also be held to raise funds for the deco- rations, fl ag poles, etc. for each group as well as landscaping, benches, trees etc. that will be added after the monuments are built. Please come out on March 2 from 1 - 4 p.m. and help us honor these great people and show your support for them for all they do for us. There will be refreshments served and perhaps some demonstrations as well. Plans are still being fi nalized and it is hoped that we get a big crowd for the ceremonies. Be sure to check this paper for future dates of work ses- sions and fundraisers! For further information, please call Joanne Winer at 928-927-6551. Heroes Appreciation Day planned March 2
