Seems folks are always seeking something; happiness, peace, pros- perity, etc. But, some folks appear to actually seek fault in others, or focus on all that negative stuff in the world. Happiness should be so simple... think of the newborn child's fi rst eye- to-eye contact with the new mother. That's being totally present, in the moment, total bliss. Just thinking about those moments can help us when we're down in the dumps. When we get out of harmony with ourselves, all heck breaks loose. Awhile back, I quoted Muham- mad Ali because I liked the saying, "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish noth- ing in life." I never dreamt someone would say, "Oh, I see you quoted a Muslim." I just wanted to shout, "hey, it's about the message, not the messenger!" (No pun intended) But, I was curious how quickly one (that would be me) can get "out of sorts" so quickly, just because some- one said something negative. Well, come to fi nd out, our brains are simply built with a greater sensi- tivity to unpleasant news. Negative events have a greater impact on ev- eryone's brains than positive events do." Everyone's...not just mine. Take, for example, the studies done by John Cacioppo, Ph.D., from Ohio State University. He showed people pictures known to arouse positive feelings (say, a Ferrari, or a pizza), those certain to stir up negative feelings (a mutilated face or dead cat) and those known to produce neutral feelings (a plate, a hair dry- er). Meanwhile, he recorded elec- trical activity in the brain's cerebral cortex that refl ects the magnitude of information processing taking place. The brain, Cacioppo dem- onstrated, reacts more strongly to stimuli it deems negative. There is a greater surge in electrical activity. Thus, our attitudes are more heavily infl uenced by downbeat news than good news...so what do we do? Researchers found that it takes frequent small positive experiences to tip the scales toward happiness. Some researchers have found it is the frequency of small positive acts that matters most, in a ratio of about fi ve to one. Occasional big positive experiences—say, a birth- day bash—are nice. But they don't make the necessary impact on our brain to override the tilt to negativ- ity. It takes frequent small positive experiences to tip the scales toward happiness. So guess we better start doing lots of small postive things in our life! Keep posting those posi- tive sayings online, and repeat after me...Peace, Love, Joy!
