So small. Dressed in black. When he stepped through the door the crowd erupted in tribute, ris- ing to their feet. He climbed the steps to the stage, slowly, aided by a cane, and when he gained the top he grinned and said "I made it." The crowd again applauded and roared their love and appreciation. This was Paul Winer's fi nal Quartzsite Improvement Asso- ciation (QIA) concert. The Desert Sky Theater was packed, extra chairs were added. People cheered, clapped and kept time to that won- derful Jazz/Boogie beat. His fi n- gers were just as sure, the rhythm just as good, maybe the feet didn't pound the fl oor quite so hard as before. The music was all there, the man before us was diminished in stature but not in talent. Cancer, surger- ies all have taken their toll, "But," he says "I've written a lot of lyrics while watching the cactus grow outside my window." There was no self-pity, just thankfulness for this audience, this town and the QIA. There were tears, not of pity but of anguish that this too must come to an end. And many in the audience shed tears with him. He promises to still be around and play when he can, where he can. The standing ovation at the end, one of many, said it best, "Paul, we love you and God willing you'll be back." After thoughts...
