Monday, May 17, 2010 – Daily News – 5B Odd & Ends NJ college valedictorian proposes HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey college valedic- torian had a special graduation gift for her boyfriend — a wedding pro- posal, which he accepted. Moments after finishing her speech Sunday at the Centenary Col- lege commencement, Emily Hawley called fellow graduate Josh Walk- er to the stage. She then popped the question, drawing loud roars from fellow graduates. Hawley didn’t have a ring to give Walker and didn’t get down on one knee. She tells the Daily Record newspaper of Parsippany (par- SIP’-uh-nee) her proposal was ‘‘nontraditional enough.’’ Walker admits being caught off guard but says he didn’t mind. Hawley and Walker are Maine residents who’ve dated since they were sophomores in high school seven years ago. They haven’t set a wedding date. Dog needs Viagra for heart issue HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (AP) — A New York animal shelter is seek- ing donations of Viagra to treat a pit bull with a heart condition. Staff members at the Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Huntington, on Long Island, say 6-year-old Ingrid needs two of the little blue pills every day or she will risk heart failure. They say a vet suggested it. The pills cost about $10 apiece, and the shelter has been asking Via- gra users to pitch in and donate their unused pills. Viagra was originally developed as a heart medication but is now used mainly by men to give their sex lives a boost. Mail end up in carrier’s garage PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The United State Postal Service has recovered approximately 20,000 pieces of mail — some of them more than a decade old — from a Philadelphia postal carrier’s garage. Special Agent Scott Balfour says it took three mail trucks to remove the letters. The carrier worked in the city’s Bustleton neighborhood. Balfour says some of the mail dates back to 1997. Postal officials say they recovered the mail on April 28 and it was being delivered to customers this week. Balfour wouldn’t comment on what prompted the investigation but says the carrier hadn’t been to work since February. Postal officials haven’t identified the carrier. Balfour says they’re still trying to find the man so they can question him. NJ ’robbery’ was failed drug deal MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Police in southern New Jer- sey say a man called to report that he had been robbed after getting angry with someone who sold him fake cocaine. Middle Township police say 24-year-old Lawrence Walsh called them Thursday and said he had been robbed at a convenience store. Officers soon responded, but the alleged assailant had fled in a cab. But police learned Walsh bought what he thought was cocaine from Thomas M. Sexton, a 23-year-old Lower Township resident. When he realized it was crushed Sheetrock, he made the robbery report. Sexton was charged with distribution of imitation drugs, while Walsh was charged with wandering in a public place to purchase drugs. Neither man returned phone messages on Saturday, and it was not known they had retained lawyers.
