2 C huck Vinci '83 and I share many of the same qualities among simi- lar and contrasting applications. Similar to Chuck, I have a passion for recruitment. While I was unable to serve as vice president of re- cruitment for fall 2016 (having joined the previous semester), I fortunately became one of the 10 chosen committee members. Even for spring 2018, I keep this position on my résumé because I love to embrace the energy I get when talking about recruiting 33 excelling students who have all made their own impact on the house. While I have never held a position relating to house manager, I have a dif- ferent passion which resembles Chuck: RLC—the Illinois Alpha Residential Learning Community. More specifically, SPEARS, which stands for Sigma Phi Epsilon Academic Resource System mentors. SPEARS mentors help fellow brothers who are facing academic challenges.. Ever since fall 2016, I have always volunteered to be a SPEARS mentor. No other experience in college has been as rewarding as helping a struggling brother overcome their unique obstacles to succeed in class. Whether they need help with external conflict, study techniques, or new resources, each student teaches me how to better approach mentoring. For this reason, I became the head of SPEARS on the RLC committee for fall 2017. In addition to SigEp, I assist in mentoring and tutoring in HKN, the hon- ors society for electrical and computer engineering. is position comple- ments my RLC experience and betters my ability to communicate advanced technical topics. Additionally, I am able to combine my passion for helping others with my love for science, math, and technology. Lastly, I enjoy one other passion: health and fitness. Because of this, I have been a member of Illini Powerliing and Illini Bodybuilding since my first semester at Illinois. Recently, this experience has translated to SigEp in the form of leadership. I was chosen as our chapter's Sound Body for the fall 2017 semester. With nine years of training and diet experience, I give this knowledge to other members in the form of training schedules, diet plans, and answering questions. Similar to tutoring for HKN, I am able to com- bine my assistive qualities with a topic near to my heart. While Chuck applied his qualities differently, I believe we are very simi- lar at the core. Whether our passion is providing a beautiful place for our brothers to live or supporting the health and well-being of our brothers, Chuck and I both seek to bring outside knowledge into the fraternity to better our peers, while using the knowledge we gain from within to better the world around us. Fraternally, Noah Mathes '19 T hrough my involvement on campus, wheth- er in or outside of Sigma Phi Epsilon, I have embodied the spirit and passion of Jeff Miller '87. I could tell during my first months in SigEp that this organization was going to have a large impact on me during college and even aer I graduate. Aer two-plus years, I could not have been more right about my initial thoughts. Due to this, I also wanted to leave an impact of my own on the chapter. I began this journey by serv- ing as vice president of finance during my first eligible semester to be on the executive board. While our budget was 60 percent of what it was in previous semesters, I worked extremely hard to make it as fun of a semester as possible. I put in countless hours over the summer on the phone with our alumni board and fellow executive board members to come up with creative solu- tions to bring in more money and save money on our events. Instead of simply giving up on the position, I did my best to make it work and set the next executive board up for success. I always give my all when I sign up for something. My next semester, I took on the role of brother- hood counsel, which runs rituals and serves as the liaison between the undergraduate members and alumni board when situations arise. In addi- tion, I was a Phi coordinator, which is a position that monitors members in their second semes- ter in the chapter. We work on improving their understanding of the chapter and help them give back to the house through a creative project. Now I am again on the executive board as the vice president of residential learning community. is newer position focuses on members' grades, professional development, and alumni and fac- ulty relations. I plan on improving our alumni relations by creating a professional networking database for undergraduates to use. In addition, I will bring in three faculty members to speak aer chapter meetings throughout the semester. Also, my position allows for some creative and fun events that focus on developing undergraduates into more well-rounded men. I plan on hosting events such as RLC Golf, RLC How to Shoot a Gun, and RLC Grilling. ese are three skills that most men enjoy doing and that can be useful for the rest of their lives. Overall, SigEp has helped me so much with both my personal and profes- sional life, and I want all younger members to have that same experience. I have been involved in a professional business fraternity and an investment organization at the University of Illinois. ese organizations have Michael Vinci '86, brother of Chuck Vinci '83, Vinci/Miller Scholarship Fund recipient John Carlson '20, and Peter Kim '87. helped me get on the track to a successful career in the investment world. However, this can only be accomplished if I continue to work hard in the classroom. While pursuing a degree in finance, I have taken many challenging classes and have to work hard to achieve the grades that I am capable of. I will work as hard as I can in these next two years to continue my success in the classroom and network to find internships and full-time positions. I know that in order to land Noah Mathes '19 Shares Same SigEp Pride as Chuck Vinci '83 John Carlson '20 Inspired by Jeff Miller '87 to Leave Legacy at Illinois Alpha
