For Alumni and Friends of the Illinois Alpha Chapter Fall 2018 University of Illinois | Sigma Phi Epsilon information | www.illinoissigeps.com Donations to the Illinois Alpha Foundation can be made to P.O. Box 42, Elmhurst, IL 60126 or online at www.illinoissigeps.com/make-a-donation. A nother calendar year is coming to a close. As we say goodbye to 2018, we want to thank those who support our chapter's foundation and share some of the benefits reaped by Illinois Alpha over the last year. In this news- letter, you will read of more about our scholar- ship programs, scholarship recipients, and other happenings with the chapter. e Illinois Alpha Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not- for-profit corporation formed in 2015 to advance the Illinois Alpha RLC of Sigma Phi Epsilon. The Illinois Alpha Foundation was created to engage, celebrate, and support our important mission. Fundraising efforts to date have grossed nearly $60,000, proceeds which are dedicated to un- dergraduate scholarship programs and facility improvements. Undergraduate Scholarships Nineteen undergraduates benefitted from schol- arships last spring thanks to the support of the Illinois Alpha Foundation donors. Approximate- ly one year ago, 94 donors, including many Illi- nois Alpha brothers from the 1980s, and friends of SigEp came together to create the Vinci/Miller Scholarship Fund. e Vinci/Miller scholarships honor the memory of Chuck Vinci '83 and Jeff Miller '87, both influential brothers deeply com- mitted to SigEp. e Illinois Alpha Foundation was delighted to honor Noah Mathes '19 and John Carlson '20 as the respective inaugural winners of the Chuck Vinci and Jeff Miller scholarships. As we look to the future, endowing the scholarships in perpetuity is within reach with continued fi- nancial support. Please consider giving to the Illinois Alpha Foundation to benefit SigEps for years to come. A Donor's Perspective When it comes to working with non-profit foundations, few have more experience than Art Murray '58. Art has served on the Illinois Attorney General's Charitable Advisory Council, as board chairman for the Salvation Army, Chicago Children's Museum, and several grantmaking private foundations. Art also served several years as the treasurer of a non- profit home for the elderly and oversaw their endowment fund. "I can better appreciate all that Christopher S. Dillion '03 and Kenneth A. Naatz '74 do as vol- unteers for Sigma Phi Epsilon, and thank them for their services," Art said. "It is reassuring to learn that the Foundation is in good hands and being handled properly. It is also good to know that the Foundation is not paying fees or expenses to any individual, and thus basically all contribu- tions will go for the scholarships. I think it is great that the chapter has created its own named schol- arship fund, rather than having to go through the national office. Everything looks impressive." One note that Art would like to make to potential Illinois Alpha Foundation donors is to, if possi- ble, donate via check rather than through PayPal. "e Foundation has to pay fees to PayPal for the online donations, as many charities have to do for their donations. Most donors do not think about or know about such charges. I will send checks when I make any donations, but I realize that younger guys may prefer online gis," Art said. e Illinois Alpha Foundation is charged a 2.2 percent fee plus $0.30 per transaction for PayPal. Whether choosing to mail a check or making a gi online, any contribution to the Illinois Alpha Foundation is appreciated. We hope you enjoy learning a little more about where your dollars go and how you are making a difference in our brotherhood. Fraternally, Christopher S.
