In 1970, Edward started McMillin & Company in North East, Pa., a commercial bakery that produced lunch box pies. He sold the company in 1985 and moved to Winter Park, Fla. For more than 30 years he could be found every day working outside at Winter Pines Golf Club, a public course that he purchased in 1982. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is survived by his daughter, Jamie; sons, Jon and Jeff; grandsons, Christopher and Matthew; granddaughter, Nat- alie; and his sister, Kate. Ed was a hardwork- ing and dedicated family man who touched many people with his generosity and kindness. Edwin Sherman '75 (Γ1072) entered Chapter Eternal on October 28 at the age of 62 at his home in New Carlisle. He married Mary on Oc- tober 11, 1980, and had three daughters: Amy, Beth, and Meghan. Ed enjoyed being active around his home and would go out of his way to help those in need. ALUMNI NEWS William Nichol '50 (Γ603) was awarded the Holstein Association USA's 2018 Distinguished Leadership Award, which recognizes an in- dividual who has made a career of providing outstanding and unselfish leadership for the betterment of the dairy industry. He is a tireless promoter of Registered Holstein cattle and has developed ideas that have contributed positively to the industry. For nearly 40 years, William was at the helm of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. As ex- ecutive director, he spearheaded the state's orga- nization, and initiated programs and services to benefit Holstein breeders. During his career, he coordinated the activities of 50 county clubs, and increased membership to more than 6,300 mem- bers statewide. After retiring in 1997, he received the lifetime title of executive director emeritus. Under his leadership, the Pennsylvania Holstein Association grew to the point that a 125-acre farm was purchased to accommodate the ship- ment of cattle for export to more than 50 coun- tries. William even flew with the cattle to help buyers in other countries with herd management techniques. Leading the dairy industry forward for decades, William created a lifetime legacy. He has devoted his life to providing outstanding and unselfish leadership for the betterment of the dairy industry and the Registered Holstein cow. E-mail: wcnichol@prodigy.net Bill Kincaid '51 (Γ662) wrote in response to the fall 2017 Gamma Crescent that the top left picture on page 7, which can be seen on page 4 of the current issue, shows members from 1952. The picture caught his eye, because he was on Bob Laufer, Penrose Hallowell Sr. '48 (Γ571), Penrose Hallowell Jr. '73 (Γ1030), and Jesse Hal- lowell '97 (Γ1392) deep sea fish at Point Pleas- ant, N.J., in August. the far right with a white, long-sleeved shirt. The brother standing on the far left is the late Chuck Rightmire '50 (Γ600), who originally encour- aged Bill to join AΓP. Center in a bow tie is the late Ken Thomlinson '50 (Γ604), who was Bill's big brother. "I am fortunate to have known these men." E-mail: dkincaid@comcast.net Rick Steinmeyer '69 (Γ968) stays busy with a lot of year-round landscaping work, golf course maintenance, and taking care of a number of oak trees. He lives in the fast-growing city of Bonita Springs, Fla. E-mail: ricksteinmeyer@yahoo.com Arthur Ramicone '72 (Γ1014) was pre- sented with the University of Pittsburgh's Ca- reer Achievement Award for his work as the school's CFO. He retired earlier this year after his 30-year career with the university. E-mail: aramicone@cfo.pitt.edu Stephen Jacobs '76 (Γ1080) expressed how much he would miss Gamma's red oak tree after reading the fall 2017 issue of the Gamma Cres- cent. He shared some insightful history of the tree. "It was deer season in 1977 and about a dozen brothers went deer hunting. It turned out to be a good day as five or six of the brothers bagged their deer. We got back to the house late, and it was colder than usual for that time of year. Alumni Update It was decided to hang the deer up in the oak tree until we could arrange a butcher. The deer were hoisted up into the heights of the tree for the night. The following morning two state police offi- cers knocked on the front door to investigate a complaint. It seems the Phi Psis in the house be- hind us saw the deer and called the police. They thought it was some weird prank, and after an inspection, the deer was ordered to be removed by end of day—we enjoyed venison and deer baloney all winter." Email: ebtjake@gmail.com
