Chi Zetagram Chi-Zeta Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha at the University of Illinois CHAPTER ETERNAL Paul Flum '43 X505 entered Chapter Eternal on November 5, 2017, in Santa Barbara, Calif. James Roberts '43 X512 entered Chapter Eternal on January 24 at age 93. Jim joined Lambda Chi after serving in WWII, where he received a degree in commerce. More importantly, he met his wife of 70 years there, Sarah, who survives him along with their three children, five grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren. After graduation they relocated to Neenah, Wis., where he began his 50-plus- year career in human resources management, and became a lifelong Packers fan. Late in life, Jim shared his experiences in World War II as part of an oral history project meant to preserve those experiences for posterity. In his honor, the Human Resources Association of Connecticut created the Jim Roberts Scholarship Fund, which has raised more than $40,000 for scholarships. Paul Klein '45 X558 entered Chapter Eternal and we received this note from his wife: "I want to let you know that your fraternity brother, Paul Richard Klein, passed away on September 17. I believe Paul was in the graduating class of 1949. Paul went on to receive his PhD from MIT in Nuclear Engineering, class of 1959. Paul's family and I wish you all great success in your chosen fields. Sincerely, Mrs. Susan Klein." Paul is also survived by his two sons. Our hearts go out to Susan and the family. Carl Whalen '49 X594 entered Chapter Eternal on April 2, 2017, at age 89. Carl was father of four, grandfather of nine and great- grandad of three, and was married to his wife, Sarah, for 65 years. A colonel in the Army in WWII, he was a bridge engineer for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway System and a board member of the Chicago Mass Transit District. Bob Eberhart '53 X653 entered Chapter Eternal on June 27, 2016. Survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Norma, and three children, Bob got his degree in architecture. He served as High Beta and editor of the Chi Zetagram as an undergraduate, and worked on plans for a house expansion in the mid-'50s, which was not built. After graduation he served in the Air Force in the Florida Keys, where he met and married Norma; he practiced architecture in several states before retiring in 2006. He was active in several architecture associations and the Rotary, a supporter of the Boy Scouts, and a member of several choral societies. His daughter, Lynn, writes: "My father enjoyed his time with Lambda Chi Alpha and spoke of good memories all of his life." Alumni Update Brothers at Murphy's Pub who came to town for the Illini football game and a little golf on September 8-9. Bernie Kavanaugh '78 X1085 entered Chapter Eternal on December 9, 2017, after a short battle with brain cancer at age 58. One of the first residents of the '78 new addition, Bernie got his degree in computer engineering at Illinois. He lived in Florida and was father of two children and grandfather of three. Ryan Robert Spokas '01 X1656, 36, of Chicago, Ill., entered Chapter Eternal on Friday, August 24. ALUMNI NEWS Dr. Larry Jeckel '70 X934 and other members of the Alumni Control Board (Pete Kale '75 X1020, John Crook '72 X980, Kim Kardas '74 X997, Jim Conlin '79 X1095, Eric Mennel '84 X1207, Chris Gary '85 X1225, Mike Kadubek '86 X1268, Dave Dutton '87 X1288, and Steve Parsons ΦΒ341) met with chapter members at the start of the semester to discuss improvements in recruitment, sexual harassment and alcohol awareness, chapter finances, and other important topics. Additional training sessions are scheduled throughout the semester.
