The top and low scores are thrown out and the remaining three scores are averaged. Stop is worth 50 points and judges look to how the dog goes to the lead of the lead cow and if they show sufficient power to stop and control cattle when challenged. The remaining 50 points are split evenly between obedience and control. Consignor and breeder Katie Martin has been working with top-notch stock dogs for seven years. While the locals may have been complaining about the weather lately, Martin was looking forward to her second trip to the Red Bluff sale in part because of the weather. When she left her ranch in LaGrande, Ore. with her border collie Bar MK Demi the weather was in the low teens. Martin said she trains her dogs about 30 minutes a day, but because they are on a working ranch they are constantly receiving of real like experience. The most stressful part about the sale week is the sale itself, she said. And of course there's always saying farewell. "You get attached to them, kind of like your kids," Martin said. "So you'd like them to go to someone who will see them like you do." The Dog Sale is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Don Smith Pavilion. The second Bull & Gelding Sale Trade Show location in the Ron Knight building had little traffic Wednesday for opening day, however, the primary location closer to the Don Smith pavilion had a steady stream of customers. "It's been going good," Carlos Duarte of Carlos' Silver said. "It started officially at noon, but we had people here at 8 a.m. It's going to be a good week for everyone here." Duarte, who is based out of Roseville, has been coming to the trade show for more than 30 years, he said. "What makes our business is that we get a lot of repeat customers," Duarte said. Lifelong resident Hazel Brown, whose father Abner McKenzie was a Bull Sale Director, said Duarte's booth is her favorite. "Every year I come look at the watches," Brown said. "My husband bought me one for our 30 year wedding anniversary and I wear it every day." Brown remembers well the days when the trade show was in a big tent that would have the sides blow up during bad weather, she said. "I've been coming to this since I was a little tiny kid," Brown said. "When I was little this was hardly nothing." Shellie Horn of Shellie's Western Creations out of Turlock started coming to the bull sale as a gelding exhibitor as a child and has only been a vendor for three, she said. She and Terry Britland, who have been friends for 23 years, travel to shows all over, but are in the process of putting in a permanent shop in Modesto and Oakdale, Horn said. "It takes us a good eight hours on a good day to set up," Britland said. "Last year we had someone spend $500 plus the amount to ship it close to San Diego." Among some of the more popular items are the table that uses bull horns for legs, she said. "It's a great show," Chris Lundgren of Lundgren Charolais said. "Every year there's something new and there are such talented people. We love it. We always zip on over here in between bulls." She and her husband Don have been coming as consignors out of Winthrop, Wash. for three years, Lundgren said.
