"The Great Escape" (1963) This list wouldn't be complete without the fact-inspired story of Allied prisoners of war conspiring to get out of a German camp. "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972) Passengers in an overturned ocean liner make their way through the upside-down ship in producer Irwin Allen's drama that launched the disaster- movie craze of the '70s. "Papillon" (1973): Though the true story had a recent remake, the more effective version remains the first one, casting Steve McQueen as a Devil's Island inmate determined to regain his freedom. "Midnight Express" (1978) Arrested in Turkey for trying to smuggle drugs, a young American (Brad Davis) sees his only recourse as an attempt to escape from the brutal prison to which he's been sentenced for at least 30 years. "Escape From Alcatraz" (1979) Clint Eastwood teamed with director Don Siegel for the last time on this true drama about the only successful escape ever made (as far as is known) from the island prison. "The Fugitive" (1993) Harrison Ford is the wrongly murder-accused doctor on the run from Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones in this big-screen version of the 1960s television series.
