The students master cutting, styling and coloring hair, says academy President Jim Butenschoen, but "we want to make sure you can make a living immediately after you graduate." With a program for high school students offered through Northwest Technical In - stitute in Springdale, Career Academy has about 400 students enrolled at any one time, he said. The newest campus has opened in southwest Fayetteville, with other locations in Springdale, Rogers and Siloam Springs. "Ninety percent of the salons in Northwest Arkansas prefer to hire our students right out of school," Butenschoen says, citing a survey he conducted. "They know they're prepared. We call it 'salon ready.'" Career Academy accomplishes this goal by moving students quickly out of the mannequin-head training phase to working on customers. The program is 1,500 hours, he says, with the first 150 on mannequins, then moving to cutting the hair of relatives and friends, and finally customers to the schools.
