Friday, May 14, 2010 – Daily News – 3B Farm Sanctuary tour season under way ORLAND — If you’ve ever wondered what life could be like for farm animals if they weren’t used for human interests, you’re in luck. Tour season has officially begun at the California Shel- ter of Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Situ- ated near Orland, the shelter is home to hundreds of farm animals rescued from abuse and neglect. Tours of the 300-acre sanc- tuary offer a rare opportunity The following defen- dants were sentenced in Tehama County Superior Court, according to the Tehama County District Attorney’s Office: —————— Recent State Prison Commitments: • Joseph Morvan was sentenced to 13 years in state prison for sale of a controlled substance, sale,transportation or offer to sell controlled substance with special allegation- controlled substance prior, three counts Agents from the drug task force use a confiden- tial informant to purchase methamphetamine from Morvan twice on the same day. During another under- cover buy the confidential informant purchased ten methadone pills from Mor- van. • Ramon Ruelas was sentenced to four years in state prison for possession of a controlled substance to connect with farm animals and hear their inspiring tales of survival. The sanctuary’s newest residents include Taylor, one of several baby turkeys who arrived last fall, Blossom, a tiny baby piglet who was found wandering alone in a residential area this winter and Melvin, the sweet, curly- haired goat recently rescued from severe neglect. After spending time with the animals, visitors can peruse the educational dis- plays, literature and videos in with special allegation- prior strike. Agents conducted a parole search of Ruelas’ residence where they located 0.5 grams of cocaine salt in defendant’s pocket as well as a bag inside a toilet in the resi- dence containing eight individual bags of crystal methamphetamine. • Michael Andrew Roberts was sentenced to two years in state prison for evading an officer, will- ful disregard, driving while having a 0.08 percent or higher blood alcohol. Roberts was originally granted formal probation. Roberts violated his proba- tion when he was arrested for being drunk in public. • Donald Eliot James Jr. was sentenced to two years in state prison for driving while having a 0.08 per- cent or higher blood alco- hol with three prior convic- tions. Guided tours are held on Saturdays, every hour on the hour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children under 12, and free for children under 3. After the deputy was advised the vehicle registration was expired he attempted to catch up to James after he sped away. When James was located he pulled over to the side of the road before the deputy was able to initiate a traffic stop. Upon contacting James he admitted to drinking alco- hol. The deputy was also advised James had an active warrant for a prior DUI. • Honey Rose Nichols was sentenced to an addi- tional eight months in state prison for unlawful dri- ving or taking of a vehicle. Nichols was recently sen- tenced to five years in prison. Officers were dis- patched to a local hotel regarding a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival officers were advised Santana had retrieved a gun from inside the residence and hid it in the backyard before the police arrived. Officers then searched the backyard and were able to locate a short barreled shotgun hid- den in the bushes. Santana first denied any knowledge of the gun but later admit- ted to taking it from anoth- er person’s residence. Preliminary Hearings (PX) and Trials: • Royce Michael Gib- son will appear in court at 9 a.m. on June 8. He is fac- ing the charge of meeting minor for lewd purposes; contact with minor for sex- ual offense; sending harm- ful matter. An Investigator from the District Attorney’s Office had created a false My Space account on the internet posing as a 13 year old female named "Kelli". Gibson began chatting with "Kelli" and sending sexually explicit photos of himself. During one of the chats "Kelli" advised defendant she was only 13- years-old. Gibson and "Kelli" then made plans to meet and engage in sex- ual conduct. The investiga- tor "Kelli" then drove to the meeting place where he contacted Gibson and advised him he was he was the one posing as "Kelli". Gibson admitted to chat- ting with "Kelli" and also admitted he was aware of her age.
