Volume 117, Fall 2018 Join the Brotherhood Society 2 Action Status 3 Brothers Recognized 4 Alumni Update 5 T H E A L P H A M U TO M A H AW K Theta Chi Fraternity at Iowa State University GOLDEN AGE FOR ALPHA MU Alumni Turnout, Generosity Higher Than Ever I t has been a good fall for Theta Chi at Iowa State Recruitment has been going well and the house is in excellent condition The tailgate on September 1 had the largest turnout of alumni in recent memory We had brothers attend from as far away as New Jersey and Alabama Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate for the football game as a thunderstorm ended the game after only four minutes of play If you haven't attended a tailgate recently, consider joining us next year It is always a good time Larry Buss '68 has decided to step down from the board of directors after serving for 12 years Larry has been an outstanding board member and we are sorry to see him leave We have been able to award more scholarships than ever before this year thanks to the generosity of our alumni The undergraduate brothers appreciate your support Being able to award scholarships is beneficial to recruitment Best wishes to all for the coming new year Fraternally, Ted Hovda '73 Alumni Corporation Board President tshovda@comm1netnet Decades of Dedication Ted Hovda '73 Honored for Unwavering Service to Alpha Mu I n the past 38 years, hundreds of Alpha Mu brothers have pledged their loyalty to Theta Chi, spent their years living in the chapter house, and graduated to alumni status In those same 38 years, Ted Hovda '73 has met many new brothers, witnessed technological advancements, and supported the chapter through its peaks and valleys As a board member since 1980 and Board president for many of those years, at this point, Ted and Alpha Mu have become synonymous "I was motivated to serve the chapter as a volunteer because I felt I gained a lot during my college years and as a result of Theta Chi I wanted to give back to keep the fraternity a strong and vital organization on campus," he said "Initially, my motivation was to stay until the original mortgage was paid off and we accomplished that and did a good job getting the old house updated Then the fire took place and we rebuilt From there, it became a habit and I've always enjoyed the brothers I've worked with We have outstanding board members" For his nearly 40 years of volunteer work, Ted was honored with the Earl D Rhodes Theta Chi for Life Award at Alumni Weekend this fall "It was quite shocking—I had no idea I was nominated," Ted recalls "It was humbling and I hope to continue to serve for a while" From teaching him how to coexist with various people and learning how to conduct meetings to meeting his future wife, Susan, at a brother's wedding, Theta Chi has helped pave Ted's life path throughout the years "I always enjoyed my time as an undergraduate and on the board," he said "I believe we are a strong organization and are going to continue to make it even stronger into the future" Professionally, Ted spent 21 years as a prosecutor and 20 years as a defense attorney He and Susan raised their three children, Jamie, Lee, and Margaux, and enjoy time with their four grandchildren Ted also spends his free time gardening, traveling, reading, and cheering on his favorite football and basketball teams He lives in Garner, Iowa, and can be reached at tshovda@comm1netnet Ted Hovda '73, seen with his wife, Susan, was honored with the Earl D.
