Two decades later, a television-series version also proved popular. "The Haunting" (1963) A researcher (Richard Johnson) gathers a group to investigate a supposedly haunted house in director Robert Wise's true hair-raiser, also boasting Julie Harris and Claire Bloom in the cast. A less-successful remake was attempted in 1999. "The Shining" (1980) "He-e-e-ere's Johnny!" Otherworldly tenants have sinister fun with the keeper (Jack Nicholson) of an isolated hotel and his family in Stanley Kubrick's version of the Stephen King tale. "Poltergeist" (1982) This Steven Spielberg- produced, Tobe Hooper-directed scare show brought ghost stories back to the movies in a huge way ... to the degree that this film had two sequels and a TV-series spinoff. "Ghost" (1990) Spectres both benevolent – principally in the form of Patrick Swayze – and not inform this romantic fantasy-drama, in which the apparent movement of a penny on its own power is a big clue to the presence of a ghost. "The Sixth Sense" (1999) The plight of a youngster (Haley Joel Osment) who can "see dead people" draws a psychologist (Bruce Willis), and sets up one of the greatest twist endings in movie history.
