Page 3 Sigma Phi Epsilon F lorida Alpha's third annual Balanced Man Scholarship (BMS) awards banquet, held September 7, was once again an inspiring event in the life of our Chapter. This year's banquet, a formal event held to recognize 14 of the UF's most outstanding young leaders, attracted more than 100 active brothers, alumni, and guests who witnessed $1,000 scholarship awards presented to three of the 14. The scholarships, funded by the Florida Alpha Educational Foundation, attracted an applicant pool immensely deep and talented with over 160 applicants. Finalists were selected following a round of interviews and a thorough evaluation of their application. From there, the Balanced Man Scholarship Committee collaborated to select the three winners. Two of the three BM scholarships awarded went to Brothers Luis De La Rosa '22 and Stephen Zaremba '21, who have accepted invitations to join SigEp. The third winner, Carlens Clervoyant, was unable to attend. The banquet also featured recognition of active brothers for their dedication to the ideals of the brotherhood. The Steve Shewbrooks Support Award was given to Brother John Sandstrom, Oregon State '74, for his hard work and commitment in getting the air conditioning issues repaired in our beautiful house. Keynote speaker Bert Harris '74, former Grand President of SigEp, current President of the Florida Alpha Educational Foundation, and Order of the Golden Heart recipient, emphasized the importance of the Balanced Man Program in making SigEp a national leader in re-branding fraternities as positive college experiences for young men today. Brother Harris and Brother Bill Lambert '76 also presented scholarships to four exemplary active brothers. Those scholarships are also funded by the Florida Alpha Educational Foundation. This year's BMS featured a revolutionary focus on identifying potential new members through the interview process. The Chapter recruitment committee identified nearly 50 individuals that we sought to recruit as members and have extended bids to 10 men, with more bid invitations to be offered over the next several weeks. I would like to thank all who attended the banquet and the brothers who worked with me to make the event a success. I am also grateful for the guidance throughout this journey from Brothers Steve Shewbrooks '66 and Al Alsobrook '60. The brothers of Florida Alpha are already looking forward to next year's Balanced Man Scholarship process.
