Tuesday, January 15, 2013 – Daily News Whiskeytown is recruiting volunteers Is Whiskeytown one of your favorite places to spend your free time? Do you enjoy helping others, sharing knowledge, learning new things, and developing new friendships? Would you like a chance to serve your community, support your park, and have fun at the same time? If so, we are offering you an opportunity to join Whiskeytown's dedicated team of "Volunteers-inParks." We are looking for friendly and dedicated volunteers to assist with staffing the visitor center, which is located at the intersection of Highway 299 and J.F. Kennedy Memorial Drive. Three positions are currently available: two on Saturday morning, one on Wednesday afternoon, one on Thursday morning, and two on Saturday mornings. Training and uniforms are provided. Duties include greeting visitors and providing information about the area, as well as selling park passes and bookstore items. Volunteers should have the interest and ability to learn all about Whiskeytown and its resources, and be able pass this information accurately to park visitors. Volunteers should also have the ability to learn how to operate a cash register, credit card machine, and understand park procedures for selling park passes and bookstore items. We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of three to four hours per week to the visitor center, although opportunities may exist to donate more time if you are interested. Visitor center volunteers are scheduled on a specific day of the week and shift time, which is consistent from week to week. Some flexibility is possible; however, reliability and punctuality is essential. Volunteers are selected based on their demonstrated ability and sincere interest in preserving and protecting Whiskeytown's resources, and providing the highest level of service to park visitors. If you would like more information about volunteering at the Whiskeytown Visitor Center, call the park Fee Program Manager at (530) 242-3412, or check the park website at www.nps.gov/whis. Applications may also be obtained at the Visitor Center, or by writing: Fee Program Manager, Whiskeytown NRA, P.O. Box 188, Whiskeytown, CA 96095. Lassen park free entry "Lassen Volcanic National Park has waived fees on Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20 to encourage visitors to attend the second annual Lassen Film Festival and discover winter in the park," said Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz. These free entrance days coincide with the scheduled fee-free day on Monday, January 21 in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Lassen Film Festival celebrates Lassen through outdoor fun and film. This year's selections include films featuring California State Parks, park wildlife, volcanoes, and space exploration. View the complete festival schedule at www.nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/film-festival. This free event begins at 10 a.m. at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Visitors are encouraged to bring snow clothing and equipment to enjoy snow play before or after the festival or to participate in the Saturday or Sunday 1:30 p.m. ranger-led snowshoe walk. Visitors traveling to the park should be prepared for winter weather and driving conditions. Carry tire chains in your vehicle from October through May, along with extra food, water, and blankets. For more information contact the park at (530) 595-4480, Thursday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or visit the park website at www.nps.gov/lavo.
