Saturday, January 12, 2013 – Daily News 5A Agriculture farm Water district unveils live wildlife webcam On any given day multitudes of waterfowl species can be seen in fields surrounding Western Canal Water District (WCWD) where over 50,000 acres of rice is grown and 3,600 acres of permanent wetlands are maintained. "I've have watched these beautiful birds for over 10 years out my office window and thought why shouldn't everyone see what I see?" said Ted Trimble, WCWD general manager. Farmers in WCWD provide valuable habitat for wintering and migrating waterfowl along the Pacific Flyway. Typically rice harvest is completed by October and fields are then flooded to decompose rice straw that includes left over rice kernels but also other waterfowl food contained in wetland plants that also grow in the flooded fields. "It it our hope that outdoor enthusiasts, wildlife viewers and even school teachers will take advantage of our webcam," Trimble said, "We want to share with the public what we still marvel at on a day to day basis." The public can view the Live Wildlife and Rice Farming Webcam at www.westerncanal.com and look for the tab by the same name. The 12mm camera can be viewed 24 hrs a day and provides realtime video to observe hundreds to thousands of waterfowl in a 1,000 acre viewing area with Mt. Lassen in the background. Viewers can expect to see Tundra Swans, Northern Pintail, Ibis, Mallards, Sandhill Crain, White Fronted Geese, Snow Geese, Shovelers, Widgeon and an occasional Bald Eagle. "California rice farmers provide a high quality rice crop along with being important environmental partners in providing over half of the food of a wintering waterfowl," said Eric Larrabee, WCWD president and partner in Larrabee Farms. "WCWD has been a long-time believer in environmental stewardship, beginning with the Butte Creek Fish Passage Project to protect spring-run salmon, continuing with groundwater management and our ongoing agricultural water use efficiency measures." WCWD was formed by landowners in 1984 and encompasses approximately 67,500 acres in both Butte and Glenn counties. WCWD purchased the fully-metered Western Canal water system from Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), who had acquired it from the Great Western Power Company. WCWD provides water service to both the Llano Seco and Howard Slough Units of the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area.
