Hansen's interest was confirmed Wednesday by people with knowledge of the situation. They spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because no deal has been reached. One person said the Kings could sell for more than $500 million. The Kings' future in Sacramento has been uncertain because the Maloofs and the city haven't been able to come up with a long-term arena solution. Yahoo! Sports first reported the discussions between the Kings and Hansen. Yahoo! reported a possible sale could land the Kings in Seattle for the 2013-14 season, where the team would play at KeyArena as a temporary home until a new arena is constructed. ''I know as much as you do,'' Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn said when asked about the situation. ''If it's true, ain't it cool?'' His counterpart in Sacramento thought the news anything but cool. At an afternoon news conference, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said Wednesday was significant because for the first time Kings fans know the team is for sale. Johnson said he would do all he could to try to find a buyer with a Sacramento connection to possibly purchase the team and keep it in California's capital city. ''We're going to fight, and we're used to being in this situation,'' he said. Hansen, a Seattle native and San Francisco-based investor, reached agreement with local governments in Seattle last October on plans to build a $490 million arena near the city's other stadiums, CenturyLink Field and Safeco Field. As part of the agreement, no construction will begin until all environmental reviews are completed and a team has been secured. Hansen's group is expected to pitch in $290 million in private investment toward the arena, along with helping to pay for transportation improvements in the area around the stadiums. The plans also call for the arena to be able to handle a future NHL franchise. The remaining $200 million in public financing would be paid back with rent money and admissions taxes HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER See KINGS, page 2B BASEBALL U-Prep Corning 4:30 p.m. BOYS HOOPS Red Bluff falls to Shasta Voters don't elect Bonds to HOF Oroville Red Bluff 7:30 p.m. GIRLS HOOPS Red Bluff Oroville 7:30 p.m. NBA Dallas CSNC Sacramento 7 p.m. Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Aldon Smith. And a talented, playmaking secondary. Smith is a smash-mouth footballer to the core. The definition of the blue-collar player Harbaugh so loves. Smith chips his teeth about once a season thanks to a refusal to wear a mouth guard because it restricts his breathing. ''Justin, his presence just back on the practice field, I can tell you this, that there's a character of our team that's enhanced, is driven by Justin,'' Harbaugh said earlier in the week. ''And that's the way I think of it. That's what I sense and feel when we're out there on the practice field. And we look very much forward to having him back in the lineup.'' Until last month, Smith had started 185 consecutive games dating to his rookie season of NEW YORK (AP) — Steroid-tainted stars Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa were denied entry to baseball's Hall of Fame, with voters failing to elect any candidates for only the second time in four decades. In a vote that keeps the game's career home run leader and one of its greatest pitchers out of Cooperstown — at least for now — Bonds received just 36.2 percent of the vote and Clemens 37.6 in totals announced Wednesday by the Hall and the Baseball Writers' Association of America, both well short of the 75 percent necessary. Sosa, eighth on the career home run list, got 12.5 percent. ''Curt Schilling made a good point, everyone was guilty. Either you used PEDs, or you did nothing to stop their use,'' Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt said in an email to The Associated Press. ''This generation got rich. Seems there was a price to pay.'' Bonds, Clemens and Sosa were eligible for the first time and have up to 14 more years on the writers' ballot to gain baseball's highest honor. ''After what has been written and said over the last few years I'm not overly surprised,'' Clemens said in a statement he posted on Twitter. Craig Biggio, 20th on the career list with 3,060 hits, topped the 37 candidates with 68.2 percent of the 569 ballots, 39 shy of election. Among other first-year eligibles, Mike Piazza received 57.8 percent and Schilling 38.8. Jack Morris led holdovers with 67.7 percent. He will make his final ballot appearance next year, when fellow pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine along with slugger Frank Thomas are eligible for the first time. Two-time NL MVP Dale Murphy received 18.6 percent in his 15th and final appearance. ''With 53 percent you can get to the White House, but you can't get to Cooperstown,'' BBWAA secretarytreasurer Jack O'Connell said. Report: Lance Armstrong seeks 'redemption' (AP) — Lance Armstrong recently met with the head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to explore a ''pathway to redemption,'' according to a report Wednesday night on ''60 Minutes Sports'' dealing with the investigation that cost the cyclist his Tour de France titles. USADA CEO Travis Tygart, in an interview that aired Wednesday night during the show's premiere on Showtime, didn't discuss the meeting on camera and provided no details, including when it was held and where. The only mention, with no elaboration, came at the end of the segment. Tygart didn't respond to messages left by The Associated Press seeking comment. The New York Times reported last week that Armstrong and Tygart had been meeting about a possible confession. Armstrong's attorney, Tim Herman, denied the meetings had taken place. DN staff reports The Red Bluff Spartans boys soccer team fell 6-2 to the Shasta Wolves on Wednesday at Red Bluff High School. The Wolves led Red Bluff 4-0 at the half. Shasta (7-1-1) built its lead to 6-0 before Red Bluff senior forward knocked in a penalty kick at the 33minute mark in the second half. Spartans senior defenseman Marcos Ramirez added a goal with a nice strike from the right box near the end of the match. Red Bluff falls to 0-7 on the season with the loss. Up next for the Spartans is a home game against Enterprise at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. ——— Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 527-2151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.com. Or even his own teammates, for that matter. Running back Frank Gore endured his toughest training camp yet last summer while facing his defensive teammates each day — Smith, in particular. ''I'd take a 75 percent Justin ahead of anybody,'' Gore said Wednesday. ''At 75-80 percent, he's better than anybody at his position. ... I'm not scared, haaa! But he's a beast, man.'' Smith is expected to return to the field for Saturday night's NFC divisional playoff game against Green Bay (12-5) at Candlestick Park, and, oh, how his teammates will welcome back ''The Cowboy'' as they try to chase down Aaron Rodgers and Co. Smith, the soft-spoken emotional leader of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's unit, missed the final two regular-season games with a partially torn left triceps muscle. His arm is now covered in a protective brace for practice, and everybody involved expects him to be ready to play for the NFC West champions (11-4-1). Coach Jim Harbaugh put it this way Wednesday: ''God willing and the creek don't rise, he will play.'' Having the extra week of rest was a huge help for Smith's health. San Francisco secured the NFC's No. 2 seed with a win against Arizona and when Minnesota beat Green Bay in Week 17. It is the versatile Smith who makes this defense go — with his stingy pass-rushing and runstopping. Sure, there's Patrick
